Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread
the 5 speed will be nice behind the 350, i see lots of tire smoke in your future i cant get over how solid your truck is,great to have a platform like that to start with.

I don't think I'll be doing any burnouts either not sure how much abuse a t5 can take behind a 350. Should last a long time the way I drive. I have got my share of tickets in the past and tires are expensive anyway. buuut I havent had a 3rd pedal behind a v8 in awhile hopefully I can resist the urge. |

Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread
little bit of progress the last couple of days in preparation of pulling the engine
-dropped the drive shaft -disconnected the e brake cables -removed the shifter -disconnected exhaust -removed engine and bell housing mounting bolts (bell housing mount rubbers are pretty swollen, will order new ones -removed rams horns (gonna blast and paint those up pretty) -disconnected fuel line, and removed fuel pump still need to disconnect ignition wiring and drop the tranny, will double check, but I think it will be ready to yank then, going to store it in the crate that the new engine will be coming in Getting quite a collection of parts to blast and paint. Need to get the sand blast booth I bought put together. I am off Friday and Monday, so should make plenty of progress this weekend.

Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread
Could you post up some shots of your engine mounts? Curious what the differences are from your V8 to my L6 mounts are.
Started a build thread finally, since you were prodding me, LOL. Brian

sticking with the mechanical clutch, sticking with the stock gears (believe they are 3.73), first gear ratio is very close to the original 3speed, overdrive gear should make highway driving... a little more bearable and fuel efficient. Thanks for the comp too!

Back in 1982 I simply took off the engine mounts that were on my original 230 c.i., bolted them onto my 350 (long gone) and bolted both sides to the original frame mounts - without relocating or replacing them. 30 years later I still am running the same mounts. Greg.

Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread
Kind of excited today, picked up my 350, got it onto the engine stand. Just need to drop the tranny, and pull the O'l 283 out. Curious to see how the flywheel looks, assume it needs to be resurfaced, hope there aren't any cracks. Will be plopping the 283 on the skid that the 350 came out of, then it is time to tear down the front suspension, and prep the frame and firewall for paint.

Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread
Well, I got a lot accomplished on my extra long weekend. It helps to have a friend in the shop who listens, kinda wish Humphrey would pitch in here or there though
In between playing hockey myself, coaching my kids team, and going to watch my step son's Junior "C" hockey game, I got the engine/transmission out, and the front suspension and steering ripped off. It doesn't sound like much, but this IS my first rodeo, so I am learning as I go. I hadn't planned on removing the cross member, but it seemed a good idea to get it off and get it sand blasted. Would have been a nasty, time consuming job to prep that for paint in place. It was remarkably easy actually.

Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread
missed the main shot...
Also, question for you guys... is the cross brace that is pictured supposed to be shaped like that? The picture of the frame with the back of the blade against it doesn't really show it very well, but in front of where the steering box mounts there is quite an indentation in the frame. This is not normal either I presume (more evidence of the collision that I suspect took place at the front drivers corner)

Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread
The crossmember is bent down. Should be level, as that is where the 6 cyl rad mounts. Interesting the holes appear to be missing.

Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread
Hopin so! Thanks
This is an original 283 truck, not sure about the 6 cyl rad mount holes. If you look you will see the rad support saddle(s) at the top of that picture.

Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread
The x-m should have holes for both
So, yeah that's kind of strange. Mine had a similar bend in it.nothing the BFH won't fix. That framerail bow is different! I assume the frame is square ??(+- 1/8"). It may interfere with your PS conversion plates(or not?),just something to watch for. Looking good so far Craig T
