Re: 68 Four door build
I don't want to start a hi-jacked discussion on if its better to use 2 truck cabs or a suburban , so maybe someone can start a link before all the good subs are gone.
Having said that if you look at the crew that 'Young Frankenstein' is modeled after, the space between the doors show that they must have used 2 cabs. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=426382 I myself bought a suburban (I had 2 cabs already) for a crew build because I like the look. Someone on this forum said how much more practical a sub is and I decided , having owned a '88 & a '99 suburban and own a '05 crew now, that they were right. Maybe this build is extra hard for me since I tried to get the seller to contact me for at least 6 mos.. |

Re: 68 Four door build
Looks like the front is a Dana 44, I beleive the 68 3/4 ton still used the closed knuckle version. The transfer case looks to be Rockwell divorced unit which I think was still used in 68. The rear appears to be an Eaton. If your not using the 68 frame I would be interested in the front 4 spring hangers that are rivited to the frame. I want to convert my 70 Longhorn to 4x4 but will need to try to find out if the spring hangers are the same from 68 to 70. I'm not sure but I think the 68 3/4 ton used different front springs than a 70 possibly requiring different hangers.

Re: 68 Four door build
Haminator got that all right off the bat. On the hangers, I'm not sure if they're the same, but I'm sure you can use them on your 2wd swap anyhow.

Re: 68 Four door build
On the hangers I just want to be able to use stock spring which I allready have. Which frame is being used for the four door? I think I missed that part.

Re: 68 Four door build
I have done a long horn 4x4 swap before. It turned out nice and was very easy using the original long horn frame and 4x4 parts under it.

Re: 68 Four door build
Does any one need a 67-72 front motor cross member out of a 4x4? I have one if so.

Re: 68 Four door build
Nice progress! Didn't see where you mentioned which front end you'll be doing? Will it be a 68 (the one pictured) or something else?

Re: 68 Four door build
I have a 71 3/4 ton front end that is currently in my 70 short bed that I will be using as well as a transfer case etc. Did you move the engine back or leave it the 2 wheel drive location? I think the main things I need are that cross member and spring hangers. If you can't get rid of that frame I'd like to buy the hangers. Also how'd you deal with the rear drive shaft? did you stay with the 2 peice? Your rendition of the 4 door is sharp, I like the choice of colors. Iv'e though of doing that for over 20 years but adding step side fenders to the fleetside and running a wide dually rear and 1 ton stuff up front of course.

Re: 68 Four door build
I was gonna build a '67 GMC shorty a while back and go that color(ish) with a grey interior, what's your vision for inside?
