Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
for any of you interested in doing the Keith transfer case knob swap, there is a transfer case knob for sell on eBay at this time, it is not mine, and the price is very reasonable still

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
man I gotta tell you I am really enjoying studying these spieces of transmissions, the Four-Gearsis-Overdrivis
went to home depot and got three 3/8th - 16 x 1 inch long grade 8 Cap Screws and spring washers to bolt up the shifter mechanism to the tail shaft of this beauty I swear there is a dude on eBay selling these three bolts and washers for like $20 bucks and calling it some Hurst Mounting Kit - LOL, I paid about $3 bucks for mine |

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
so lets take a look at the linkage shall we
first thing you may notice is that I am missing the middle rod, the longest rod, that I believe is the 3rd/4th gear rod the green tape shows you where it would start at and where it would end at, minus a few strategic twists and turns |

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
then I decided to exercise the transmission a little bit, and noticed I had difficulty shifting between 1st and 2nd gear, not even using the shifter just holding the loose rod with my hand and trying to push it forward and pull it aft
I switched the rod to the 3rd and 4th gear and that one shifted fine by hand so there was only one thing to do, that is peak inside the belly of the beast first I noticed that two of the 10 bolts in the rosary have different washers and are a bit longer, what I didn't notice that there is a third bolt which itself isn't longer than the other 8 but does have a thicker neck, this proved to be a PIA in terms of getting it back in, in other words I forgot which hole it came out of |

i was pleased with what I saw, nice oily bits and no broken teeth or metal shavings, and pleased with what I didn't see, that being any rusty parts

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
I am trying to get used to this tight Hurst shifter, as I like mine loose as a goose, not very racy of me, but I just like wiggling the thing when I'm sitting at a red light
so after putting the cover back on, I now was able to use the shifter to shift between 1st and 2nd gear, its kind of hard when your transmission is resting on the tailgate of your truck not bolted up to anything, but you can do it now Reverse Gear - forget about it, I can shift it by holding the rod in my hand, but the only way I can get it into reverse with the shifter is by using a flat screw driver and wedge it under the control mechanism, more on that later so decided to pop the dust plate off from the belly of the control mechanism, check out how filthy it was |

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
so what did it like up in there?
gross, but what did we expect after 40 years of never vacuuming, lol second pic is after we hit it with a little brake cleaner and poked at it with a flat screw driver, it aint done being cleaned by any means, but at least ow we can begin to see what mechanisms lurk inside |

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
You can get the A833 3-OD truck shift rod and operating lever from Brewers for around $40.

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
Your best choice would be the OEM GM parts. Call your buddy in Bakersfield to see if he has the rod...
If you can't find em the Dodge truck pieces will probably work. The likelihood of the flat rectangular A833 3-OD lever being different is not high.

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
LOL, trust me we searched the premises already, also it was his boys project so after they lost interest he sold the pieces to me, he never had the original 1982 truck this trans came off of, they were going to install it in their 1984 4x4 and convert it from automatic to manual, very ambitious task, that fizzled

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
Looks nice, good luck with it. My '86 stepper came with one originally, and below are a couple of photos. I believe the shifter, boot, and knob to be original. Only thing I changed was the speedo cable seal, otherwise original. Have changed and upgraded the engine a little over time. No power shifting, however, works great once in gear and getting on it (400 HP/400Ft-LBS @ 5600RPM). The overdrive is very nice, with 3.73 gears. I like the 3.73 gears for first too, you can go slow in first if needed.

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
Funny how the shift linkage on that transmission is extremely similar to the linkages on the NP203 transfer case. Even the NP203 transfer case got the "Hurst" embossed shift handle

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
Just wanted to add to a very informative thread.
I've gotten mine cleaned up and found some numbers I'm assuming that the stamped number are Vin numbers? Can someone advise? And the pinkish red numbers on the top of the tranny, anyone else have these or know what they are or mean?

C = 2wd B = 1981 model year (A= 1980, B=81, C=82, etc) 1 = Oshawa Assembly plant code 134583 = sequential portion of VIN - Chevy nameplate 14030811 looks like a GM part number; 3260 might be a supplier unit number or lot information. I don't recognize the "219" on top of the case, or can't see enough to get some context. Normally that would be the "broadcast code" corresponding to the 8 digit part number (you can see the "DN" or "DH" in Gregski's photos) or the chassis build sequence number (which would be hand written). Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
Gregski, when you pulled the side cover, did you replace the gasket with a gasket or did you use RTV?
I got her all cleaned up this weekend and Ill be cleaning the snot out of the shifter. Which is complete minus one shifter handle(knob).

CAN YOU DO ME A SOLID, a huge favor, can you remove the side cover bolts one by one and tell me which one is that odd bolt out looking one, you will know when you see it, it is one of the 8 shorter ones, but it has a longer neck just below the head of the bolt before the threads start, I don't know which hole it came out of and it don't fit in right now, pretty please |

These are the two bolts that I found with smaller washers. If that helps.
