Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Notch came out good!
Shame you had to pass the C10, from the pictures it looked like a real nice truck. Something you would find overhere, then you look underneath.... I think you guys have a lot of space to think about another project, while the other isn't finished yet Wish I was in that position.....

My exhaust platform idea worked...it's a start. Now to find fairly short mufflers to be able to make the 90 to the exhaust outlets in the running boards. The pipe clamp shown in the picture came from Stronghands and it worked extremely well for holding the pipe sections being butt welded. Very well made quality clamp for like $38 from Amazon. |

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
My TIG welding skills are not there yet to be able to tack weld the butt connections. Without going into details, it was pretty much a Three Stooges episode. I was laughing at myself.
So I resorted to the MIG for the tacking needed. That worked! Now, to put in about 100 hours practice with the TIG...it is always rewarding to learn a new skill. |

looks killer, great jig you made. I bet you could make a set of those clamps rather easily.

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
I was just thinking that any chance we could get a closeup of them? they appear to have some sort of roller maybe?
For $38 though I don't think its worth converting a $32 pair that one would already have to make them unless you could make it more of an attachment

Thanks guys. Yeah 99, you could probably make a set though these are very smooth and stable. By far better than any clamp I have ever used.
Val has a good point and per his request here is a better pic. Marc, you must have seen the preview! |

Nice looking exhaust. I'm not sure but I think your exhaust hanger might catch fire.

Mufflers are on order from Jegs....thinking the run might get too long to make the 90 turn to the outlet. Canning the X would simplify this, though am going to try to fab it out to fit. |

Thanks Chizzler. Kinda slow though some progress. The mufflers came in and hope to see about fitting them up tomorrow. Spring here has been so wet there has been zero planting done. One of my neighbors has his equipment ready to go as soon as the fields dry up enough for working. Iowaboynca, I took this pic just for you. |

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Thanks joedoh. The 56 has the X pipe and I like the sound. Even though there will be variance on the Burb with much shorter pipes after the mufflers, I am looking to somewhat duplicate the sound.
An H pipe is next up if the X doesn't work out. |

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
OK, the X pipe set up fits.
The patent pending exhaust support system was moved back to support muffler placement. Welder series header collector flanges were used to connect the exhaust tip and flex pipe. Same for the 90 muffler exit pipe to the other end of the flex pipe. Thanks again to Bob and Marc for the flex pipe suggestion! One of the pics shows layout to determine where to cut the 90. And I forgot to include the flange thickness, so I had to cut it again. Right side is positioned and tacked together. Somehow I didn't order enough flanges, so hopefully they will be here this week. Then I can finish the left side. Once finalized, some of the connections will be welded and some secured with band clamps to facilitate any future removal. Then a couple hangers and it should be good to go. |

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Doug
The exhaust looks fantastic...Nice work. Hey in looking at your pics you might want to add a flex joint closer to the headers. I added mine after I noticed I was getting welds breaking from stress cause by movement. My exhaust system in the 48 is all SS and SS can act weird when heated and cooled. I actually have my tips with a rigid mount. I tied to have them with movement like yours but my tips would bang against the opening in the running boards. especially because like you I kept the tip opening as small as possible. Just my 2 cents, you know what your doing. Marc

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Thanks Marc and Coach! Me know what I am doing? Naw, making it up as I go and using what I learn here...and I am always way open for advice and suggestions.
Marc, the tips are bolted solid in the mounts in the running board. The rest of the system from mufflers forward is the same as I used in the 56 and it hasn't had a problem with cracking. Could be because the Pypes is 409 stainless rather than the 303? Appreciate the heads up! Here is a pic of a really nice one I found today in a thread. this one is a lot cleaner installation than mine. |

The funny thing is this was my exhaust version 1.0 In 2.0 I added a small SS brace that bolts to the running board mount to keep the exhaust tip from rattling against the running board. In version 3.0 I added flex joints and I changed the flanges on my exhaust to better match my headers. Third times a charm. Thanks Marc

Nice job Doug you got all that to fit together really nice in such a tight place. I cant wait to hear how it sounds. It took some time but I really like your under running board exhaust. Nice touch.

Hey Doug.
I was finally able to make it through all 48 pages of your thread. What a great build! You've done a lot of great work! Your exhaust looks great! I am starting mine tomorrow and hope it comes out as good as yours did. Thanks for spending all the time to document what you have been up to. Dave

OK, it won't win a Riddler award, though it should be good enough for this old Burb. I don't like the regular style exhaust clamps and yet need to use them on the muffler as the exhaust bends too close to it to use a band. There are exhaust bands at the slip joint behind the downpipe extensions to make disassembly easier. The butt weld at the down pipe to the extension and the slip joints going into the X pipe will be welded. And the flanges at the flex pipes need welding too. |
