Re: My New Truck

So I was debating on how to clean the intake manifold as it looks pretty greasy, on the inside.

Came across this guys video on youtube and it works really well to clean out the intake runners.

I think they turned out pretty good!
What was your process for lapping the valves and flattening the surfaces?

Edit: Nevermind, sorry. I clicked the link to the Powernation video.

I started by testing the sealing of the valves and found that several had issues so this lead me to rebuild my own heads...

First I disassembled the heads looking for cracks (found nothing!). Then I soaked them down with some oven cleaner. Then I power washed the SH** out of them, they were way dirtier than I would have guessed. Then I bead blasted them (mostly just the combustion cambers) I avoided the temptation to do the deck surfaces. Inspected all the valves, and seats (all looked great). I decked the cylinder head surface as shown in the Powernation video, with the big metal tube highlighted by the yellow arrows, below (however, I didn't start with 80 grit, I used 120 grit to start with), that took away the rest of the old gasket material on the cylinder head deck, and I felt very confident in the fact the heads were now flat. Are the race engine certified?

NO, but for my truck they ought to be pretty good.

I pretty much lapped the valves in, as this guy at Horsepower Monster shows in his video:

Re: My New Truck

I was looking at the oil pan pictures again and wondering about ground clearance. Do you know how far it will hang below the factory crossmember?

Re: My New Truck

Just did a great Brake upgrade to my truck, I am elated with how happy I am, and how it turned out (especially for the money spent!)

If you want to see my post of it:

Re: My New Truck

Stepped up and bought a new factory dash pad (not one of the Cheap ones from LMC or Classic truck parts), from Cobin's Custom Upholstery.

This was a GM OEM metal dash that got recovered (not one of those Urethane dashes), although the color is slightly different I guess I will live with it since it looks so much better than the other cracked mess.

I was going to redo my own, but since I am so far behind on my projects, I decided to farm this one out.

Got it installed today.

I do know this if you use the TEJAS steel works engine mounts, and the factory style (Anchor brand) Motor mounts, the oil pan, the engine and everything will sit nearly in the same position as the small block V8 the LS is replacing. Plus with the Tejas mount you get to keep the AC compressor and ITS FACTORY mounting location so you do not have to buy a $1000 bracket to mount your AC!

If you use the other brands you end having to buy a new oil pan.

pic is the TEJAS steel mount.

Re: My New Truck

The latest debacle:

I went to start the engine and primed the engine with oil prior to starting it about 2 days later (Still have not started it yet), I noticed a pretty good sized oil spot (10" in diameter) under the power steering pump area (if it was installed). Upon further inspection I am finding that the oil seems to been leaking between the oil pan and the block right below the negative ground cable bolt? See yellow arrow in picture.

So now I am pulling the oil pan and installing a new gasket. Thank God the engine wasn't in the truck.

This why I like running them outside the vehicle BEFORE installing them!

Re: My New Truck

Another fine upgrade. Tilt column is a nice feature… and just yesterday I was kicking myself for not adding cruise. 120 mile round trip and cruise would’ve made it that much sweeter.

Thanks! Yes you are correct. Is your LS Drive by wire (DBW)? If so adding cruise wouldn't be hard if you have the factory ECU. If its cable driven its a lot harder.

One of the main reasons I went with DBW.

I’m DBC on the Cheyenne. I have DBW on my 62 Impala 6.0 swap and I’ve always felt like there’s a tiny delay in throttle response. You can barely notice it… but it’s like when you’re watching a movie and the sound is off by just a fraction of a second… you hear the words and the actors mouth is just slightly off? Lol same feeling and it drives me nuts. So I went DBC on the truck.

Yes I agree DBW always seems to have a lag. If your running the stock ECU I understand the can write some of that lag out. We will see. For me its more of the challenge to put it on the truck, just like the Tilt feature.

It didn't have it, but the only way I was going to do it was with a FACTORY unit.

Re: My New Truck

I’ll second this. I tried a lokar dipstick on my 62 Impala 6.0 swap because it looked 10x better than the stock one. But it ended up being nothing but a headache (mounting, incorrect length etc so I eventually swapped back to stock. Seemed like such a simple item, but man did it end up being a pain in the ass.

Agreed, at least that is what I have read as well. That's why I bought the AFTERMARKET hard tube, hoping I would NOT have some of those issues...will see...

Re: My New Truck

I thought I would share this since I just recently learned this:

A fellow C10 guy approached me and stated that my Truck has a "Special Deluxe" Camper Special package that was NOT the base model package. So after some searching I have found the GM document which supports such.

As this 3/4 ton Camper Special Package has some different options than other Camper Specials, all of which were factory installed.

1) rear shocks in the BED of the Truck that are attached to the cab,
2) tie down hooks with bolts and brackets to fasten a camper to frame of the truck through holes in the side of the pickup bed, (with grommets around the holes).
3) Front fender shock mounts to bolt shocks to the front overhang of the camper.

Gm Titles this:

Also includes Elimi-Pitch Package consisting of rear stabilizer, horizontal shock absorbers mounted between cab rear panel and pickup box sides panels, vertical shock absorbers brackets mounted on front fenders plus vertical shock absorbers shipped loose for dealer or owner installation.

I guess this package is labeled the z83 "Deluxe" Camper Special Package. Versus the base Camper Special package of z81.

See RPO sheet.

Thanks for the update on the turtle ceramic. The truck looks great! And thanks for taking the time to detail your process. It's a good read.
