Re: Another 4X4 Front Sway Bar

With a 4" lift, you will need shims between the cross member and bushing retainers. I posted pics in the 4wd forum years ago. Mine had the 4" lift as well.

Any pics or a link to pics? Ant spacers laying around? I know that first one had some that you said you removed.

If you go to my build thread:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...259859&page=12

pages 12 & 13 you can see what I did. I had the same frame brace for the steering box and decided to keep my original cross member and modify the bushing brackets instead of changing cross members. I wanted to try and keep a somewhat stock looking appearance. Maybe this will help you some !

Re: Another 4X4 Front Sway Bar

Great work sir. Though I don't think I have your fab skills. That was sort of my idea too but I was worried about cutting those ribs off where it bolts to the frame. I did use the 73 up front x-member as upon checking the side by side it is thicker. I have it in there but the bar brackets will not fit and must go outside the frame on the bottom like yours. I guess I could reverse the ribbing and make it go downward, just cut it all off and move it lower and weld back on. Love how you did the tabs that bolt to the member and will do that for sure. Thank You for the inspiration! Any one else?

Re: Another 4X4 Front Sway Bar

I know that taking the ribs off so it could be bolted under the frame will weaken it some, but I really didn't want to mess with the cross member or the steering box frame brace, besides this truck will be living an easy life from hear on !!!! "LOL"

Re: Another 4X4 Front Sway Bar

I am thinking spacers instead of removing the ribs and possibly spacers under the sway bar bushings as well. I have to get it lower anyway due to the lift. And if I ever break a mount I can just replace with one from the junk yard. I won't be wheeling mine much anymore. Those Rubicon days are over unless I make one hell of a long trip. Oh well maybe- It does have that crawl box still in there.

Re: Another 4X4 Front Sway Bar

Did some work on this yesterday. I thought the driver side was going to be the biggest hurdle but I think I figured that one out. The passenger however is giving me some grief. I don't like the angle on it versus the driver and to me looks odd. Not sure the force of the bar in a real world situation would hold up and if it lets go while I have a big trailer on the back it could prove to be catastrophic. I want to keep it level. I think I have it figured out. I should be able to keep most of the ribbing by placing 3/8" solid stock under the driver side but will have to fab a wedge sort of mount for the passenger. I am going to leave them a bit rearward to utilize the strength of the x-member rear mounting hole with a spacer and the bar should be putting most of the downward force on the mount itself. So kinda using both of you fellas ideas and modifying both to make it work. I am going to have a 20 ft trailer full of wood and heavy concrete at times on the back so I have to be as safe as I can. Not that either method looks unsafe- I am just trying to mimic as much as possible the stock install.

Re: Another 4X4 Front Sway Bar

I finally have it where I want it. I think the passenger mount will be ok. I took a bit from both of your installs. Thank you both. I will post some pics soon. Cannot find the camera.

This is what I came up with. Haven't driven it yet. What do you think? I will powder coat the pieces when I am satisfied.

Ray,
I'm finally installing the front sway bar set up you sold me this past summer. Good winter project :-) I'm having issues with the U-bolt plates you sent me. Looks like the U bolt plates on my 72 Jimmy are for 2.75 axle tubes and the ones you sent me are for 3.0 dia axle tube. Do they make sway bar U-bolt plates for 2.75 tubes. If so do you have some and could I trade back for the 2.75 plates?
Thanks,
Eric

Yeah- I'm loving mine too. No rear but still a HUGE difference. Can't imagine having a new truck in 73 with one of these.

Ray,
Well I finally was able to get back out in the barn and work on the sway bar install some more. The U-bolts I have around the 2.75" axle sprung out naturally to fit through the 3" U-bolt plates you sent me. I have attached some pics of the install to better support your sweet thread you have here!!
Thanks, Eric

My Jimmy is a 1972 and it haa a factory powersteering reinforcement plate. This pics shows how I had to cut some of that plate (Top and Bottom of Rail) for the cross member to fit.
