Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

I'm sure as soon as I post this someone will let me know why. Maybe I've been drinking too much, but why did you mask off the centers of the doors, but not the fenders?

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

he was having problems aligning the molding on the fenders as there isn't a constant body line to make sure they were square to the world. I believe he knows where that line will be on the doors, and will hang the fenders to locate the white area on there later.

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

I went round and round on where the upper molding should go on the fenders. I know where in theory, but what if the front end of the molding needs to be adjusted a quarter or half inch up or down so that it runs straight with the rest of it on the doors and bed? You can't do it because the upper molding stops about 1 inch short and leaves your paint break line showing. On top of that the molding comes to a point and so it is critical that your paint line is exactly in the middle. I just had a bad feeling that on the final assembly my front upper molding might end up running uphill or down. I am going to mount and adjust all the sheet metal and then pull a string to mark where to mount the molding on the fender, drill the holes, tape/plastic the whole truck and shoot the white on just the fenders at the end. I might be over thinking it, but better safe than sorry.

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

Liquid frustration.

A big fat run pictured, and 2 pics of a landfill worth of trash that took up residency in my fresh paint.

Last pic is a shot of wet sanded with 600 grit but I need to hit it with the block and sandpaper just a tad more to get rid of those few shiny spots of trash.

And if anyone is wondering, I have not re-primered, this what the blue looks like when wet sanded.

Ok, I remember reading that now. That makes sense! So what changed from the time you painted the interior till now to affect the amount of trash? I ask because I'm becoming a huge fan of guys doing their own paint and want to learn all i can from others.

Try misting the plastic walls and floor down with water prior to painting, also blow off parts before painting and wipe down with tack rag. You may have done these things just thought I would chime in.

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

Drew, why did all the other parts that you painted look so nice, then the last batch turns out fuzzy? Seems like alot of crap, seems like whenever that happens to me its usually my gun that has not been cleaned properly, and the new solvents are "melting" the old in the gun and blowing the lovely little chunks.

Just a thought, and remember I bought my booth at the same place you got yours!!!!

I've seen that before when a coworker that was just out in the work area sanding down a truck came into the paint booth to spray some parts. He was in a hurry and forgot to blow himself off before he came in. The sanding dust on his body & hair came off and ended up all over the paint. The booth was clean and sprayed down but he was not. Just a thought.

Thanks for the tips, I think I had the fender sitting on a table that I did not clean. I should have blown it off, or covered it with plastic. I also didn't tack cloth off the paper on the doors. I blew off everything and the walls and floors last night and shot it again this morning and it turned out much better.

Drew,
Wow!! very nice work .. NEVER to be a critic or knocking any of your work .but i was wondering why you did not locate the fuel tank filler in the rear opening of the left rear fender marker light .. Does any one know where the old link for this modification is on here ? a while back some guy on here used a filler pipe .. He put it in the rear side marker light area .. he used the filler door harware from a s-1o p/u donar i think for the hinge and door .. he was able to fill his gas tank from the rear side marker opening.. i want to do this on mine as well .. someday with a rear tank.. any way..
Your truck is awesome and you are an amazing mechanic and metal worker . a true crafsman. i cant wait to see this on the road..
GOD BLESS AND KEEP THOSE PIC.S COMING.. DANDELUXE

My free gas tank, part of my free frame/engine/trans/rear axle /wiring /etc, has a filler neck that aims towards the front of the truck. I don't remember what page, but I have pictures of it on here. Since I am going for the stock sleeper look, I wouldn't want to shave the gas filler, and the gas tank neck lines up perfectly with it - so there you have it. I want the truck to look original so that the main thing that jumps out at you is " Wow, that sure is a clean factory crew cab". Not, "wow, that thing sure has a ton of body modifications done to it - look they even made it into a crew cab." See the difference?
