Got the carb on yesterday. No more gas smell is the first con. Currently determining gas mileage so i'll report back with that. I still need to do a little tuning.

Scored a new instrument bezel off the classifieds here. Clear glossed it and slapped it on. not NOS but a great driver improvement over my faded one which is now for sale!

OK! Back to it. Was on a short break for how do I say.. choosing my battles

Finally got the ol' girl to fit in the garage to beat the heat this summer. I have a nasty oil leak that is my current mission to stop. I went ahead and dropped the front drive shaft. I'll clean paint and re-u-joint it. Also drained all fluids and will drop the tranny and oil pans to re gasket. I also plan to replace the crapped out t-case mounts with poly.

Nice build. Makes me wish I would have went ahead and built up a little 4wd play toy on the 77' K10 short bed frame I had. If you are ever in the Eastern part of the state around Edenton, you need to look in a my buddy AJ's Uncle Hoghead. He had about (6-8) round eyes in his personal junk yard behind his shop. He builds all of the motors in that area as well.

So there are letters stamped into the block. Was this done at the factory or or could this only have been done by a rebuild. I strongly believe it was never pulled and opened but not sure about the stampings.

Pulled the oil pump off and it was filled with plastic bits. Either the pump shaft sleeve came apart or the gear on the cam is failing.. Either way I cleaned out the pump and soaked it in carb cleaner. It will go back in for now and be replaced when I do the engine rebuild next year.

Those ittty bits are your cam gears failing. Going to want to swap that very soon.

The cam gear is steel and the driven gear on the distributor is plastic right? If the plastic gear fails completely, you lose oil pressure, but the distributor stops too, so you would loose power immediately (ie engine shuts down) as soon as the gear fails, and therefore there is no danger of running without oil pressure.

But that looks like an awful lot of plastic for that one tiny gear. Must be holding on by a thread.

Sorry to hear about the battle. In one myself, and losing. Likely leading me to a divorce now.

I just put a new motor in mine, 35 pounds of compression on 2 cylinders I got a GM GoodWrench 350 for 1509$ shipped to my door from Summit. Good deal for a daily driver motor

This is a factory timing chain setup. The cam gear is lined with plastic. Supposed to make them quieter or something. And crashz, that is the only bit of plastic in the timing system. Both the distributor drive on the cam, and distributor gear are metal.

You are partially right. Stock most distributor pump bushings are plastic not metal. Usually when a person works on a motor if they do some research they will find its a good idea to upgrade to the heavy duty style with the metal bushing.

When I took my engine apart both my cam gear nylon parts were obliterated and the oil pump bushing crubmled.

Years ago the timing gear cam gear broke apart on my 400. The were the plastic like gears. I replaced the timing gears and chain with steel and never looked back.

I made a phone call to the PO and he enlightened me that the timing gear had been replaced.. Probably due to the plastic one failing. That being said, i feel good to run the motor for another year to keep on my financial schedule and that the tid-bits were never scooped out when it did fail. #NEXT

Are you going to do the rear main seal since your in as far as you are now? Only takes another 5 minutes.

As long as you don't have a 1 piece rear main you undo 2 bolts for the bearing cap and one bolt for the oil pump drive.

Rear seals just slide out and back in.
