My dad and i built, and installed the whole stereo! the box is 55.5 inches wide, 4.5 deep at the top, and 6.5 at the bottom. make it as tall as you can behind your seat, that one is 15 high, but i think you could squeak another half inch out of it. you loose a click on your seat, but is still comfortable. i am actually in the process of putting a seat out of a late 90's Chevy in it which takes up more space and would put me into the steering wheel too much, so a new box is needed, and if you buy the new kenwood xr-w12f you can build a box that is 2 inches at the top, and 7 at the bottom. im going to make the one for my truck 2.25 at the top just to get that little extra cubes in it,but you could make it work. here's a pic of a diagram i made with the real small box. with the small box the new style seat can be all the way back with the top touching the cab, so i imagine if you built that box for a old style seat it would be really comfortable, like there was no box there at all. its a little low on cu ft for the subs, but you these ol standard cabs either like you to be crammed forward, with lots of boom, or completely comfortable and have a little boom. ha i believe the 2-2.5inches at the top box is the perfect ammount, with a little relief cut in the back of the box the subs i have now, kenwood xw1200f's, will fit in the 2.5 inch top box. i just got to thinking, that 7 in. may not work on the bottom with the old seat. at 6.5 i can still get the seat all the way back, the seat back just wont stay with it, it flips forward, so that may be an option. pm me if you need more help.

to be honest with ya, i dont know how you could put a sub under the seat, i have my kicker zx700.5 under the seat, its a pretty big amp, and if you ride in the middle your sitting on it, and im sure on the passenger side if you hit a big bump you hit it over there. as of now i just dont let people ride in the middle, and try to not hit any big bumps with someone on the passenger side. im going to fix it when i have something else to drive for a couple of days. i can see no way of fitting a sub bigger than maybe a 6 or 8 in the middle where it dips down around the transmission hump, theres no way i could fit the kenwoods under the seat. if ur willing to wait, ill be buying the new kenwood shallows in the next few weeks(hopefully) and building the smaller box at 2-2.25 at the top and 7 at the bottom and will let you know how it works out. but as of now, with the factory seat and the sub box i have, its very comfortable, im 6 foot tall, and just a big guy and i have no problems at all. id say that behind the seat is the way to go, because even if you put the subs under the seat i also dont see how you could get enough space to build a big enough box to make the subs perform good. unless they are 6 or 8's. hope this info helps

That's also what I was thinking. Is there now way to fit it right under the actual driver and passenger seat? I am also a big guy, 6'4", so I would like to be comfortable of course. I can hold out for a while so maybe you will have everything and be the guinea pig

ive never tried under the seat, so i dont know but i do know that the box with the dimension of 2 at the top and 7 at the bottom will fit behind the new seat all the way back. so if you measured the bottom depth with your seat all the way back, and could settle for a good set of tens, it would probably fit behind the old seat like there is nothing there. as of now i have other things for college and just paying for gas with the 454 in ol grey so i sadly inmagine it will be quite a while before i can afford the new subs maybe not though. i have too many projects, evh frankenstein guitar, my truck, guns, and weight lifting, its all just too much and too expensive

Maybe I will have to do a little more research. Good to know about the seat and dimensions though. I feel you on the money issue though. Paying my damn college now myself and now the new truck I'm trying to fix up

Here's a custom box we build for my dad's '71 C10. I'll be doing something very similar for my '77 K10. We wanted to make it fit as well as possible with the curve of the back wall just under the window. It's all MDF for the center box. The sides we made out of MDF and fiberglass. The 6x9's are recessed into the box to be covered with some hardware cloth (still looking for the right kind). It'll be upholstered soon in a black marine type vinyl with a very low grain.

The 6x9's are temporary. Hopefully we'll get some new ones in there this summer. It sounds awesome though! I couldn't be more happy with the way it turned out. Turned out nice for both sound quality AND volume!

If you notice the amp is mounted IN the box. Same idea as the 6x9's there. It'll be covered with some hardware cloth later on. There's a 12v DC fan down below which runs off the remote power to the amp. It pulls cool air in and pushes warm air out the vent holes I left in the top of the box. It pushes air into the cavity under the back window and the air disburses from there. It runs nice and cool!

And yes...The speakers are off center. That was due to obstruction below the floor. I think it was the fuel lines or something that weren't simple o move out of the way.

The Lexan widow is 3/4" thick so not much change of damaging the speakers below by carrying anything on top of them.

I bought them from member Bigbock73. CNC cut and perfect bends. And perfect fit in the cab corners.

This isn't a super custom install by any means but it's something that could easily be done in any vehicle. I wanted a new head unit in my 91 vw gti with cd player & usb hook up for my i-pod but didn't want the usb connector on the face of the unit because I didn't like the idea of having cord's hanging down from my dash. I got a fairly nice & inexpensive alpine unit that had a usb cord adapter on the back of it than I went down to norvac(a computer parts store) & got a 6" usb adapter cord for a pc hard drive that has 2 screw flanges on it for screwing it to the hard drive frame. I removed the glove box insert from my car & found an out of the way place to cut a rectangle hole for the male usb cord, drilled 2 small holes on each side of the rectangle hole & screwd the usb adapter to the top back side of the glove box insert. Now I can plug my i-pod into the glove box & keep it out of sight. By the way, the alpine unit I have controls the i-pod so I don't have to change songs on the i-pod itself. It's done from the head unit:

Kenwood makes a powered subwoofer that's meant to fit under a seat. I have one in my truck, it sounds really good

I am pretty happy with the sound from my truck. I have 2 12" shallows, 2 6" components in the back and 2 6" coaxials under the dash, with an amp under the passenger seat for the speakers and another behind the middle for for the subs. The best part is I can still fit 3 people. I moved the gas tank out back, and put in newer seats ( they take up more room so they don't help add space for the box). then built two boxes and a section to hold other electronics. I'm 6'2 and don't feel short on room.

I know the hyfonics is a cheapy but it works good and if I didn't stop somewhere the truck would have more in it than I make.

Theres a Tahoe out in the parking lot at work RIGHT now with 4 320 amp alternators, 4 15s and a WHOLE bunch more speakers than in that truck and HE'S not hitting 170.
