Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
One of my favorite Dodge photos. Makes you wonder why the other manufactures didn't keep the old cab styling a little longer.

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
Since no one has answered yet, I'm going to say by or somewhat before 1972. But maybe someone will jump in with the exact year it was implemented.

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
I don't know exactly either, but I believe '68 may have been first year. Many automobile safety standards went into place in '68, including side marker which were also required at least on light trucks as well. '69 was the first year light trucks had clearance (cab) markers designed into the truck, not just an add-on. I think all dual rear 1t trucks left dealerships with the clearance lamps mounted. Since only 1t light trucks can be registered over 10,000# I assume that requirement was for all commercial trucks.
I'm going back to big Fords for this post

Not sure where to put these poor pictures, here they are. Good looking Autocar seen in Grass Valley this afternoon. Quite a ways from home.

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
This is the place! Such a classic Autocar. One of my favorite trucks. They seem best as heavy hauler/construction use. Great long history, too. That is a long haul, especially for a rental! Must be a relocated truck. Was it working? I'd guess it's a collector truck.
Yep, just noticed the "Not For Hire" on the door

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
I'd say this one did not have marker/clearance lights.

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
I think it's a working rig. All decked out with chains and binders. Fifth wheel was greasy, the drives were all muddy. Not a "show truck" for sure. The driver was definitely a working fellow...his shirt & pants showed it. Would have liked to talk to him. Long trip to make in a day cab!

Another cool thing about Brockways is that many were Detroit powered.

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
I helped a friend move his '52 GMC cabover out of his driveway yesterday (beer reward for helping). I officially have more time in the driver seat than he does. Cool old rig.

Ford Turbine from 1964. Brief story behind it:

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
The turbine turned out to be a dud, many manufactures tried it in the 50's 60's 70's. Could not beat the " cost per mile". However, the design of present big rigs is getting closer and closer to this experimental. Notice the super large single tires, super large cab and sleeper areas and super large glass, not to mention the wing faring between front and rear axles. No wonder I'm not interested in present big rigs. Notice the " gear and lightning bolt" emblem on the front end, a signature Ford truck traditional emblem from the 50's thru 60's.
