Thanks tj, how does it work in Oregon? In bc you can get your learners permit at 16 and your novice licence at 17. With your learners you can drive as long as you have a parent in the vehicle

Thanks guys! Just got back from the yard and got a slip yoke, jeep door stops, tailgate cables and various Other little parts. I'll measure the driveshaft tomorrow and should get it shortened sometime soon.

Thanks dale, The diameter of the fan itself is 8" plus the stand adds another inch or two.

Spent some time today cleaning up the fan. Let it sit in the parts cleaner for a couple hours (minus the motor). Most of it is aluminum so I just polished it up and the chrome cage polished up nicely as well. I also got a new switch for it.

Anyone know if I'll need a more powerful alternator if I'm running the fan or will the stock one be enogh?

The fan looks good cleaned up. It probably takes about the same power as a heater blower so your alt. should be fine to drive it. Don't forget to use anti seize on the stainless bolts.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Fixed all the rust in the tailgate today. this was a bit of a difficult one, I had to make the bends using my own ghetto metal brake. It consisted of two thick and long pieces of angle iron in a vise and lots of other clamps. And the steel was donated from the hood of a 73-87 truck. In the small lip I drilled holes and filled them with spot welds. I'm pretty happy with it, the welds still need to be ground down.
Here's before:

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

The cast aluminum base of the fan had 3 out of 4 corners cracked off and only one hole left so out came the long strand fibreglass. Turned out pretty strong. After lots of sanding and redrilling the holes it looks right again, a coat of paint and you won't even be able to see where it broke.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Hello everyone, I hate to admit it but I screwed up. The panel that I just put on the tailgate didn't quite workout the way I wanted, I tried to keep as much of the original metal as possible but ended up messing up the line because some of it was new and some of it was the old metal and the bends didn't line up correctly. I wanted it to be right so out came the angle grinder with cut off wheel. I then made a new panel and made it go down the same amount all the way across. Got it welded on but still need to grind the welds down. I'm very satisfied with it now it's pretty much perfect.

The old panel ripped off

Glad to see you're taking the time to do it right, even if it means backtracking on previous progress. That's what the really good builders do. I think you'll feel a lot better about the end product.
