Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

Well yesterday I made this but photobucket was giving hell so know Im posting! This is proably my favorite thing I have ever made for this truck. I have never seen one but tell me if you have ever seen one.

Well to keep with the "tool" theme I turned my attention to the shifter knob. I was thinking the classic 8ball Shifter but that one has been used to many times. So I was thinking... A soket! that would work so I went to carquest and Got this 1 5/8" Soket for 7 bucks.

So know I had to think of how to attach it.. If I welded it on or welded a nut on the bottom it would ruin the finish. So I put a washer on the bottom and and one on the top and bolted it down tight. It wont move at all.

Well It was looking okay but I didnt like seeing that rusty nut in the bottom so I cut a small piece of aluminium out and Painted it silver and stuck it down in there. Then I thought of a problem. What if someone drives my truck and Doesnt know the Gear pattern? So I pulled it out and Wrote the gear pattern. All in all I think the shift knob came out sweet.

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

Now to todays Updates. I went to the Salvage yard cause it was a nice day and Got these Treasures:

-Gauge bezel.
-Right inner fender(Mine was rusted ALOT)
-Left inner fender(Mine was rusted ALOT)

Heres the one of the inner fenders after I went over it with a DA and some Steel wool. I also took the air conditioning vent out of my gauge bezel if anyone needs one.My trucks not air conditioned so I didnt want it I just needed a new bezel and The 2 holes they left are gonna be used. One I will put 3 toggles in (After market Front lights when I buy them, A dome light that Im gonna run from there and The heater switch cause Its rigged to run off a switch. I dont know why) and the other will be for my horn button. Well I think it will look good.

Any way heres the painted inner:

Eh, i tried what the previous owner had done but it melted the wire again in my hands [oww]. so i ran a wire to the battery and then hooked it and the radio to a toggle switch an mounted it to a piece of Tin that i made to cover the hole in the dash where the a/c used to be.

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

Well this is what I did tonight..
-Got my drivers side of my front clip reassembled With all the pieces I painted.
(no pics sorry)
-Painted my bezel a lil.
Before: (everything that was masked I wanted to stay black and it took forever to mask)

After I painted the gun metal grey: (the black didnt show up as good as I wanted but oh well)

Welcome aboard. It's always nice to see young guns working on these trucks. Keep it up. Learn all you can in shop. BTW your shifter is a cool idea.

Love the shifter and the turn signal wrench!!! here is another idea, find a socket to fit over the headlight switch and use that to turn on your headlights!

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

I'm liking this thread the more I look at it. I love the shift knob idea. I'm making one for my auto on the column out of a cue ball. I like the wrench for the turn signals, that's like what they do in rat rods by using a big a$$ wrench for a shifter. I'm gonna keep watching from the edge of my seat.

I thought about buying a big ass box end wrench to make the whole shifter out of but I didnt.

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

I saw some really cool door handles on the inside of an old VW bug on the internet a while back. Wish i still had the pics. they had bolts sticking halfway into the door panel, and a double open end wrench welded to the bolts.

Hey, you better watch out with using a cue ball their kinda heavy. You don't want to be doing 50 down the road, hit a big bump and the shifter throws its self down into first. I haven't driven an automatic in a long time, so i cant quite remember if you have to pull the shifter towards you to downshift. I just thought id throw that out there.

Oh and cool truck dude.
