Thanks for all the comments! Still working out lots of little issues, but at least it's usable. It has a cooling issue, that doesn't make sense. I have a 2 speed fan wired with relays per the instructions on lt1swap.com. It works great, until it doesn't... The low fan logic has blown out 2 relays and one fuse. I have tested the logic multiple times by grounding the leads to fan1 and fan2, like the computer does. When cruising with good airflow, the water temp (reading from the ECM) cycles between 200-210. Somewhere in that range, the computer turns on the low fan. I have no idea what temperature the computer turns on the high fan, or if it is even programmed to do so. Anyway, once the relay "blows", it starts cycling like a turn signal, and the water temp runs up to 225+ and I shut 'er down. Long story, after getting home and sitting all evening, there's a big puddle of coolant on the garage floor. I haven't investigated yet. It looks unrelated to the fan issue. Possibly a heater hose or the coolant overflow can.

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
The coolant leak turned out to be a heater hose clamp that never got tightened.
Swapped in another relay, different brand this time. Going for another test run.

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Thanks!
I think the cooling problem is computer related. Somewhere in the 210 temp range it cant make up it's mind to run fan LO or fan HI. The cycling causes the relays to overheat. When I pull out the relay, it is SO HOT that I can't touch the prongs. Looks like I'm going to have to find a local tuner to take a look at it. Problem 2 could be a stuck thermostat. Since this engine had been sitting for 13 years, I put in a new 187 thermostat before getting it running. The new thermostat housing leaked on the first fill, so I glued it on with "The Right Stuff". I wonder if some got into the thermostat and glued it shut. When the engine temp is showing 210, the infrared thermometer shows the top of the radiator to be 200 degrees, and the bottom is only 130. Anyway, it's going to be a while before I can troubleshoot it.

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
The LS engines run at 210* normally. Your radiator is doing its job cooling .
Now as for the fan cycling you can adjust the on and off temperature for both fans with a tuner via the under dash diagnostic port . If the relays are getting to hot it could mean the fans are pulling too much amps.

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Check out the pirate 4x4 site for bella vista's write up on the ls cooling system and how it works. You cant think like the old school systems with an ls engine.
I would do an amp draw test on the motors if the relays are getting hot. |
