This is how I do bodywork. The rail tops of the bed are really rough, So, I just cut them off, and formed these from 18 ga. They are a little different shape than the stockers, but you'll get the idea

Here's a shot of the new top fitted, then welded and smoothed. I really don't like body work, so I have to do it a little at a time. Second pict shows some more paint stripped, and I metal finish it as I go.

A shot of the drivers side, and some overall shots. The recess area is for the hard tonue cover (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) to sit in.

Welding the bedsides to the cab too? Not much left of the original sheetmetal on this project. Any target weight in mind?

Is it just me or does the bed look shorter than a standard 6' bed too? Truck is looking sweet either way Rob. Great work!

Nope, not a whole lot left of the OG longhorn. Yes, I'm going to fit the side to the cab, Blazer style. That saves the wieght of the front panel. My target is 28oo lbs, - but 3000 is more likely for an all steel body. OK, it's a little shorter than a stocker. I trimmed the longbed side down to the factory length for a SB, but it's moved forward 5". I'm working hard to kep the proportions right. It will either look really cool, or a bit goofy. And Hey, don't be knockin' the evercoat, thats some good stuff right there.

I got your old right here buddy! lol 70 3/8 if that is the length of that bed side? but with your wheel base I guess that would be about right. Looks really good. Where are you putting your fuel cell? I was going behind axle but am having second thoughts I can keep it really low there gravity you know but the weight of the can can play havoc that far back. Nice work on keeping the bars all under the fake bed cover that makes it look really clean.

About a year ago yes but I changed careers to something more stable and no longer have access to the software needed.

I know there is a thread where a member analyzes the different C-notch designs with finite element software. You might be able to work something out with him professionally to do it.

Rob first off nice build! secondly I have a question about your spindles. I've been around dirt racing and the circle track world for the better part of 8 years. I was thinking on all the fabricated spindles,the left was different from the right as far as the height and steering arm location. Am I missing something? I will never claim to know ever thing but I have looked into the fabricated spindles before. I may have missed something. Any insight would be appreciated! Hope to see you at RTTC again this year!

FRor the most part your right. But, Howe racing will make them any way you want. I had lengthy discussions with thier spindle tech, who was well versed in road racing. After a few calls, we decided on some specs, and they built them. Very helpfull people. Trent got his there at about the same time. I think they were stunned that two guys, 2500 miles apart, were going to try the same thing, and then when I asked him, is the other set for a guy named Trent, he was set back a bit. Small world. Yes, I'll be at RTTC, with something, silver, green, grey or yellow.

Thanks Rob! I appreciate the info. Ive been looking into building a RR/AX 88-98 truck and had the same ideas you and trent have. Being around the dirt cars(modifieds and late models) there is a lot of good susepension bits out there that can cross into our world. Thanks again!

Dumb question... and just out of curiosity:

I was wondering why you made the sheetmetal on the floor that way? I have never seen it done that way. Didn't know if it was an old school technique that I never got to be a part of, or if it was beneficial in some other way?
