Re: 66 slammed hearse

yeah thats one of the things that I always said I would do for the 56, and never did, which was to buy 15/20 filters and 5 or so sets of points, in case they quit making them.

might not be a bad idea Jon, I think I am going to try the stock filter etup again and see if it will seal up.

Re: 66 slammed hearse

This may sound dumb kd but did you remove the aluminum piece from the block that is used with the canister filter? (I think it has the bypass in it) It sounds like there is something up there keeping the O ring from sealing. And as was previously mentioned by soba_03, do you have the correct spin on filter for it? IIRC those use a F*#d filter.

Re: 66 slammed hearse

Well I hope that you get it or got it resolved. You could do like they used to do and just change the oil regularly. My 235 in the Burb had either option, it had a remote canister or just a plug in the block. If you didn't have a canister you just had to change your oil a bit more often. It would allow you to drive it till you could concieve a fix.

Just a thougth..although not the best one....

Re: 66 slammed hearse

and yes I did remove the stock bypass, I am going to reinstall the stock canister and try that. It does have the correct filter, it dont leak where the filter meets the adapter, just at the block.

Re: 66 slammed hearse

Before you give up on this, you could try some loctite 515 sealer on all of the machined surfaces and o-rings. Everything must be super clean and dry! I use this stuff at work on chilled water equipment to take up any remaining leaks in the o-ring seal on the refrigerant side of the machine. These things get leak checked to 500 microns(almost a perfect vacuum, around -60lbs or 30 inches of mercury) and this stuff seals up any imperfections. I don't see why it would not work on your seal if it is an o-ring, but if it is a flat rubber gasket, it may squish out when you start tightening it.

PS-If you are not sure if you have the right stuff, it is purple and kind of smells like grapes....seriously!(you will keep smelling you fingers, no matter how disgusted you are by the smell) Should be available at most HVAC supply places, or they can point you in the right direction.

Here is what it looks like:

I tried one of those spin-on adapters on my 68 sbc and it leaked as well... after making a mess I just switched back to the canister... advanced auto had them in stock..

no offense, but wouldn't this be considered spamming the thread? You've already made your own thread. I thought this was going to be an update of the "Halfway-Hearse"

I didn't post on this thread to step on toes. I just saw it as the same type of project and thought it would be an ok addition . I will delete if this is a problem.

Re: 66 slammed hearse

This may be a bit late kd, but I just thought of something. Could it be possible that the bolts that came with the adapter are just a hair too long? If so they would be bottoming out feeling like everything is tight, but in reality not compressing the O ring.

Re: 66 slammed hearse

Your pictures are welcome on my thread Clean, thanks for posting them. We just look out for each other on here...Thanks Suzq. And yes I did think about that captain, While I was truckin this week it run through my mind, I am going to check it out tomarrow.Oh by the way John, I almost run over you today (oct 17) at the top of 4th of july and you didnt even wave at me as you flew past, and I need your phone number again, I've lost it again. That goes for Runninlo and Jonzcustomshop as well, I have lost all of your numbers again due to a network switch on my phone.

Now for the hearse update...I am going to soda springs ID in the morning to pickup the new engine and tranny doner, 454 cubes and a th400 for now till the 348 comes off the stand and goes between the fenders. I acquired this rig with the help of 70sweetbeast and we are splitting this one, for the smokin deal of $200 for the whole truck. I am not sure if this engine will go in the burban or not at this point, maybe the next project? Also the hearse has been hired by the local chamber of commerce for a spook alley/trunk or treat deal from oct 20-31. All it has to do is show up and look scary, so I have to get some things wrapped up and install the cool, spooky lighting kit I got from runninlo. I will get some pics tomarrow, well 70sweetbeast will, but ya'all will get fresh pics on saturday. I cant wait to share all of my (and dont forget all my friends that have been a huge help, thanks guys, couldnt do it without ya)hard work and ideas with ya'all.

Re: 66 slammed hearse

I did get the BBC, I havent got it pulled out of the doner yet, but I do have it. I am planning a full rebuild with a mild hot rodding. I never solved the oil problem, mainly due to lack of time. I will be working on it later today, switching back to the canister filter. I talked to the parts guy that sold me the adapter and he is ordering a new one and will trade it out in hopes its a faulty part.

Re: 66 slammed hearse

ok, I figured out why this thing leaks oil like an excited puppy on halloween. The lil rubber o-ring keeps getting a wowee in it and dont seal. I tried again tonite to reassemble this thing with such care as if I were performing brain surgery, and......it still leaks! I am going to use this adapter as a $20 frizbee and huck it in the next county and go back the the original filter setup. I will only be running this engine thru the winter and spring anyway, till I get the 348 or the 454 built and ready to install.

I also got my plasmaglow kit installed, and wow is that the icing on the cake! it gives a really creepy glow from under the truck in about 10 colors and flash sequences. My grafics guy also cut me some super custom landau bars and I got them stuck on till my future ex-wife gives me the real ones. I hope to get some pics up asap, but I have had alot of problems uploading pics. I also got my other decals on it, on the windshield it reads "DROPSICILE" and the barn doors carry the future club name and logo of "KOFFIN DRAGGER". I still have tons of work to do, but its getting closer everday.

Re: 66 slammed hearse

Trucker's are just like lowriders, Bling and lights are our weakness, we just call them differant things. You call it "bling", we call it "chicken parts", you call 'em "leds", we call 'em "chicken lights". but we both do our fair share of "rooster cruisin", "ckicken haulin", "cluckin truckin". You strive to by lo and slo, I go for low and long.

As far as the cow smasher up front, thats called "protect the investment. it goes like this:$147,000 kenworth W900L + 1000lb elk= about $50,000 damage and the police asking questions about my logbook as opposed to $147,000 kenworth + $1200 bull bar + 1000 lb elk = dead elk and big, bloody mess on highway as my taillights fade into the darkness.
Anyway, I should see all of my western montana and northern Idaho buddies this week, stock the coolers boys, KD"s going "chicken truckin"

Re: 66 slammed hearse

We discused the 2.1 milion color thing, lol.
You will all be happy to know I have solved the oil filter problem, and it was my own common sence the whole time that made it leak.
There is a by-pass in the block, held in by 2 bolts. It retains the shape of the o-ring against the block as well. The adapter fits over it and seals against the block. It works great when you put all of the parts back it, DUH! just thought you may all need that lil tidbit of info in case anyone converts filters. Pics up tomarrow.

I bet you were like when you figured out the leak. A lot of times it's the simple things that get ya. Glad to hear you got it worked out though.

Better get the pics up before Joe sees this though!!! Otherwise, you know what's comin'.
