I think we've decided that's the trans flawildman was refering to. My inquiry was my gentle way of saying there was no five speed available that year.

The four speed is the MY6, aka the New Process A-883 trans, which is the trans I ordered in my truck:

3rd gear is 1:1 and 4th gear is .73:1.

That is an excellent chart, btw. I've been looking for one like that; Thanks for posting it.

Re: Factory odd ball trucks

1981 GMC 2500 built as a farmer's special
Options: L6-250 engine (that's right - an integral head even)
3OTT manual trans (not even a granny)
has base (sport) mirrors (cheaper)
carmine red ('cause Mom whined about the 4 previous blue vehicles..)
HD cooling
HD shocks
Firestone highway radials on 16.5" wheels
14bolt SF 3.42 w/gov-lock
No spare ($$)
no rear bumper (so Sis couln't tear up the truck towing her horses - never did learn to drive a stick)
Sliding rear window
MANUAL STEERING! it's the only 3/4 I've ever seen with that.
radio delete
heater only
manual windows, locks
rubber floor
vinyl seat

It was a real nightmare to turn in a parking lot with those big tires and manual steering.

My 87, on the ohter hand, is a fully optioned diesel.

Is that the Olds/Buick inline engine?

Didn't bid high enough to get it but this low mileage 88 K30 trash compactor would probably be considered "odd"

Re: Factory odd ball trucks

thirdstreettito, is that shortbox 6.2 for sale?? How much?

I like oddball trucks too.
My '73 GMC-
1/2 ton 2WD
Custom
307 2bbl V8
3 Speed Manual
Power Steering
Gage package (oil, temp, amps)
AM radio
Buckskin interior
Painted Mirrors
Heater
Rear Step Bumper

Theres a late 70s C20 Silverado running around here with no AC, chrome trim looks funny with no vents.

My '82 C20 Custom Deluxe has AC, gages, cloth seat, but had a factory AM radio. 6.2 Diesel with a 4 speed

In '85 the 4.3 V6 replaced the 250 I6 in light (>8600 GVW) trucks. It had a 4 barrel on it and went TBI in '87.
The 8600+ trucks still used the 292 I6 up until '87 as far as I know, but it never got EFI.

Re: Factory odd ball trucks

I've never heard of a truck from the 80s that had a 5 speed other than an S-10. 4 speed with granny first, 3 speed with OD but never a 4 speed with OD.

I suspect it was this one:

Three forward gears + overdrive = 4 speed.

I have a slightly rare GMC 3500 SRW reg. cab 2wd that is loaded. Don't see a lot of 1tons like that. Big block too.

My Big 10 was a factory goof. It was supposed to be a 3/4 ton Camper Special. Instead the dealer received a SWB 1/2 ton with a 454.

Re: Factory odd ball trucks

No, it's the Chevy. Olds and Buick stopped making inline 6's back in the 60's. All the 70-s up inlines are Chevy derived (like the Pontiac OHC which are slightly modified Chevy's).

Integral head just means the intake is cast as part of the head. Same basic short block. Probably meant to save a few bucks but they are notorious for cracking. Came out in the late 70's on the 250, the 292 stayed with the original style head.
