Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

Just got this last week. keeping everything old school with a 4" drop, white walls steel wheels with no caps. Pretty straight and not to bad on the rust. more pictures to come before I get started. This was before I pulled it home.

Re: Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

Ordered a bunch of parts this week for the interior and electrical. This weekend I'm going to clean the engine up a little and pull the oil pan to see what I can tell about the condition of the motor. The motor is a 235 out of a 55'. I would like to keep this set up but if it's no good I'll find a running used 305 or 350 to put in.

FYI if you need odds and ends there is a guy named Dean up in Bentonville who has a nice stockpile of parts for these trucks. He used to buy and sell on Craigslist.

Re: Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

No idea, its been about 5 years but I could show you where he lives on a map...will do that when my computer starts cooperating. He parted these trucks and always had a few cabs, frames, and such outside. In his barn are stacks of doors, steering wheels, glass, etc. I will dig around my old e-mails and see if I find anything too. Last time we connected I posted a "WTB" on Craigslist.

Re: Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

Pressure washed the engine and under carraige just to get it somewhat clean. Pulled the plugs again and the inspection plate off the bottom of the trans. First good news was it turns over well by hand. I pulled the oil pan after draining the oil. Nothing concerning in the pan. Pulled one of the journals off so far and I think it looks pretty decent. Crankshaft looks good too. I'm going to pull the rest and the connecting rod bearings.

Pic's are not great tho.

It's so nice to work on something for change that has so much room everywhere you turn. I'm really going to enjoy this. Everything else I've done you have to scrap a layer of skin off all your knuckles to get the easiest spark plug out. What a blessing simplicity is.

Re: Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

Crankshaft bearings were good. the connecting rod bearings were scorched and I could feel variations in texture on the crank. Going to pull it and put in a v8. With that said if I put in a 305/350 with th350 trans am I going to need a custom drive shaft? I believe my 3 speed is the longer one. Has a long tail.

Re: Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

No, but by the time I redo brakes, wheel bearings, ball joints and a drop axle with the modified steering arms I could just swap in a S10 frame for less.

Re: Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

I can only find one spot with rust holes in the frame. It's a small area about where the bed meets the cab.

Yes, gonna do a 4" drop axle. 4" blocks in the rear. Maybe remove a few leaves.
