Roof Skin with Marker Lights

HI

I have gmc truck 1970 without Marker Lights And I have Roof with Marker Lights from another truck. Is there an ideal and fast way to make the holes. I hope there are pictures of this work. Thanks

The roof marker lights are mounted on a raised flange (or boss?) so you might be better off swapping out the whole roof panel in order to duplicate that flange

Re: Roof Skin with Marker Lights

I am going through this process right now. I hate to say it but the words quick and maker lights don't go in the same sentence lol. But it is possible and the end result is very worth it, there are several photos in the link on my signature. Let me know if you have any further questions!

Re: Roof Skin with Marker Lights

Thank you for your response, but I prefer to make holes and then solder the place. The holes are in the middle I'm thinking to cut them all and then solder

Your work is great sir, but it is suitable for a whole new project. I want to keep my truck as much as possible in its original shape. I hope you understand this

I understand completely with trying to keep the truck original. I am interested to see if the pedastals can be retrofitted onto a non cab light roof. It sounds like quite an undertaking with quite a bit of body work needed around the bases. Excited to see if anyone has approached the cab light dilemma in such a way.

Re: Roof Skin with Marker Lights

You can cut the marker lamp bases off and transfer them to the cabs roof skin. It just takes measuring. It would be faster than installing a complete roof skin I'd think.

Removing the complete roof skin was super easy. We drilled out the spot welds on the roof, and around the rear window opening. The only cut we made was the rear cab pillar skin. Spot welded it all back together, and the only body work was on the rear of the cab. Seam sealed the roof again just like factory. It was done in 2 days.

Re: Roof Skin with Marker Lights

That’s good info Joe. I like that you didn’t mess with the rear upper seam above the back glass. Looks like a pretty clean way to go about it. I wonder how modern panel bonding adhesive would have worked in this application, obviously the back seams would need welded but other wise glueing it up might be a great way to do it.

Re: Roof Skin with Marker Lights

There are no shortcuts to this modification. Joe's Junk did his about the swiftest I see it. I also realize the scary prospect of cutting off the whole skin on such a nice truck as yours. That being said, " if you want an omelet, you've got to break a few eggs". I guess another alternative would be to cut the sections out like I have marked your picture and drop your headliner and trace the cut sections out on your roof and cut it. Weld them in very slowly and cross your fingers that you don't have a tremendous amount of warpage. Paint the roof and hope for good results. Whatever you decide, good luck.

Hahahahahh

In my country these lights in a truck are worth a fortune. Actually the selling price is different. In any case, the solutions are many, but the chance of finding a ready-made truck is very difficult . When I bought this truck, I couldn't believe it was still in factory condition. So I don't want to change this beauty except for the better

Re: Roof Skin with Marker Lights

Are you going to cut the entire roof off? or just the outer skin?

Re: Roof Skin with Marker Lights

All you need to remove is the outer skin. Don’t cut the whole roof off your truck.

You will be very happy with it. Cab lights are one of the coolest options. Good luck on your truck.
