My father who sold new Chevrolet cars and trucks used to tell me that the only difference was that a GMC was a Chevy with the bolts tightened down.

Just emblems and grille are different. And maybe seat fabric in some years.

Re: Chevy vs gmc

GMC=overpriced chevy lol. I think gmc has always added a few more luxury items in there givin packages than chevy.

Iv also heard of the gmc bein tougher but imho that's a myth. There identical trucks just rebadged. Up untill recintly all the sheet metal was stamped on the same assemble lines.

I believe they are basically the same truck. Maybe Mr. Keith will chime in. He built these trucks so he would probably know.

Pretty much the only differences were trim and options.

Re: Chevy vs gmc

gmc's are the fancy chevys. Just like a lexus being a fancy toyota

gmc u pay more for, thats really it, gmc was big on using 4 head lights for while, i wish they still did that.

gmc's hold value better. especially a 67-72

Re: Chevy vs gmc

Agree, Chevy vs GMC is like a Caprice next to a Roadmaster, a Chevy next to a Buick...same vehicle just optioned different.

Then there is always the humorous comparison to ponder:

Chevy...Can't Have Everything Vern, YaknowwhatImean?
GMC......Generically Made Chevrolet

Re: Chevy vs gmc

The only difference that I have found is in badging and a few option packages. Pretty much everything you can get on a GMC you can get on a Chevrolet.

GMC just allowed Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Cadillac and Buick dealers the ability to sell pickup trucks.

For '73 -87, they were exactly the same except for emblems/trim.

They went right down the same assembly line.

Actually, we could randomly leave bolts loose on either one...

BTW - It probably wouldn't surprise you all to hear that we would sometimes build a truck with Chevy emblems on one side and GMC emblems on the other...

Re: Chevy vs gmc

Call me crazy but that would be cool to get one from the factory with both badges. But it would only be cool if it was straight from the factory that way and someone didn't do it on purpose.

I wonder how many of those made it for years with no one catching on. It's not like you can see both sides at the same time. It'd have to be a person who doesn't care about trucks though.

Usually it would get caught in the next inspection station (or repair), but I wouldn't be surprised if a few got out.

Back in the late 70s and early 80s when Fox body Mustangs and Mercury Capri's shared the same body, they came down the same line too. My vocational school machine shop class toured the factory and actually saw it happening.
