I used an 84 bed on a 78 frame.
Fleet side long bed and actually was set up with dual tanks. A 77 frame with a 79 box should not cause a lot of issues. I have swapped a lot of beds and tanks. From what I remember The 73- 74ish had a small filler neck throat that attached direct to the bed. And 75-77 had a bigger filler neck. Then the 1978 box changed to the door. The plastic box that mounts the filler neck is part of the swap. The main thing I remember is the different diameter of the inlet on the tank. The Early model was smaller/ Then the later model was the middle size. The tanks with the 6.2 diesel had a bigger inlet. So it is a matter of What tank / What filler neck / and what Bed.
