Pretty sure it will, I believe you have electric fuel pumps in the tank, not sure if that will interfere somehow.

Re: ? 87 350 fi engin

yes you can, but you need a vacuum advance distributor, and you'll have issues with the electric fuel pump (or pumps) that are in the tank because they run higher pressure that a mechanical pump....i just got rid of a truck that the p.o. had done that too....

Hey guys i dont think he talking about doing it to an '87 truck i think he wants to put a '87 engine into an older truck but convert it from FI to a CARB.

If so you can do it but ya may want to change to cam and run something that will match up closer to the carb and intake combo cuz the FI cam is not gonna produce alot of vacuum.

And you can run a electronic distributor as well or any other type you want.

Re: ? 87 350 fi engin

Yes like i did i have a 1989 gmc jimmy motor that was tbi in to my 1986 which was cabarated.

I didnt change the cam and the truck runs great. i change the distributor ofcourse but thats all.

Like i stated before the main thing is the special intake. because of the catty cornered bolt aroung the carb area you need that intake. I got mine from edelbrock and the cost is 209.00.

hope this all helped Also i put v belt on theengine wish i had a serpintine setup.

If you are going to put an aluminum intake on, an earlier intake can be used by slotting the 4 center holes. It would work for an iron intake too, but would take forever to slot the holes.

Fuel pump?
The TBI engine won't have a provision for the mechanical pump.

Re: ? 87 350 fi engine

Do you still have the parts truck? The whole parts truck? Why not use the wiring harness and the computer and run the TBI? You might be able to use the tank with the internal fuel pump.

I have an 88 with a rotted frame and I'm considering doing the same converson.

Actually that would be the best and easiest way to do it!

If you still have the complete donor truck then it's just a matter of removing the complete wiring harnass and engine and fuel lines and tank and installing it all in your '79.

It's alot of work but not that hard.

Plus you have a low maintenance & high reliability of a modern FI system in your truck.

Re: ? 87 350 fi engine

Its not even the complete harness as the ECM(PCM?) is on a stand alone harness I THINK.
Where's Russell when you need him...

Re: ? 87 350 fi engine

They are "slightly" integrated for ground and power I think, but it wouldn't be too hard to pull it.

You can run the single tank directly to the TBI and bypass the fuel selector to use just one tank.

Re: ? 87 350 fi engine

i took the engine harness off a 90 burban and plugged it in to my 86. i did have to splice into some of the wires. i have dual tanks, and since i did not have the factory dual tank selector harness. i had to run wires from my fuel pumps and use a toggle switch to turn left or right pump on, to switch the tanks i used my factory switch. if you can get it done tbi is a great running set up.

He asked if it could be done, I was just pointing out that the engine will have no way to run the mechanical pump; you will need to come up with an alternative (electric) fuel pump.
