Additional VIN Locations

My grandpa swapped a 1985 2wd 1/2 ton body onto a 1976 3/4 ton 4x4 Chevy frame when he owned my truck... 3 years ago when I bought it from him i noticed the registration had the 1985 GMC VIN on it....

Does anybody know how I could recover a VIN number off the frame of my truck? I looked around and I couldn't find the full VIN anywhere...

Thanks!!!

Re: Additional VIN Locations

Yes - top side of the upper horizontal flange of the frame rail, midway along the frame (like in the vicinty of where the seat would be). The only thing is I can't remember if it's on the driver's side or the passenger side rail. I wanna say passenger side.

The next time someone corrects me on this I will make sure and write it down.

Re: Additional VIN Locations

Now - to answer the question you didn't ask - if it's registered as the 85, as a result of the newer cab being used - it might be best to leave well enough alone.

I wouldn't recommend you try re-registering it to the '76 VIN or anything like that.

Re: Additional VIN Locations

Thanks! So I would have to take the cab off to see that VIN, correct? I was going to decode the VIN to find some out about the 76. Thanks for all the info!

I went almost a year without changing mine, but then again mine has a "self-changing oil system". It used to leak/burn (the valve umbrella seals are bad) about a quart every 2-3 weeks. So I just add accordingly.

So is the VIN on the very top of the frame rail? And is it the complete VIN? (All 17 letters/numbers?)

Thanks!!

Re: Additional VIN Locations

I've got a 79, and the vin on the frame is NOT a complete vin. Mine has the first letter (I'm assuming to tell the difference between a GMC and a Chevy frame, because if the cab wasn't attached, how would you know?) and the last 8 letters, which is the year, the assembly plant code, and the then the last six sequential serial number.

This was also similar to other GM trucks I found in the junkyard. I've never seen a complete VIN on a frame.

Re: Additional VIN Locations

On my 79 GMC it's stamped on the top of the passenger side frame rail about a foot behind the cab. I think it's the full vin but I will check tomorrow.

Re: Additional VIN Locations

Thanks for all the replies! Hopefully this weekend I can find the time to check the frame rail for the VIN number. I'll let you know what I find!
