Project '66 Dirtrod: K-30 Extended Cab

After almost a year in the making, I’ve decided to start a build thread on my 1966 Chevy short-bed step-side.

The thing that started the ball rolling was picking up this ‘66 C-10, the body is pretty dang straight and a little bit of light rust, but overall in great condition.

After deciding to go 4x4 with it we found this Mid 80’s 1-ton truck from which we stole the frame out from under it.

We picked up a 14-bolt with a Detroit locker for the rear and a Dana 60 with a limited slip up front from a CU/CV military vehicle

We did a disc brake conversion on the 14 bolt and added a little bling

On the Dana 60 we went with high steer arms and Hydraulic assist from PSC

We pulled the body off, torched the old brackets and random parts, and got the frame all cleaned up .

After painting and priming the frame with rattle cans we put on 8-inch lift springs up front and 4 inch in the back with a shackle reversal.

Re: My '66 build thread

For tires and wheels, we went with 38x15.50x20 Mickey Thompson MTZ’s and a set of American racing cannon wheels.

As for the drive train, we went for a 468 with an extreme 4x4 comp cam, edelbrock carb, and heddman headers. Turbo 400 tranny and an np-205 transfer case.

We cleaned it all up and here is how she sits now.

The plan is to make the 66 body fit onto the mid 80’s frame. We are going to have a body shop turn the single cab into an extended cab, here is a poor quality photoshop of what I hope the finished product will kinda look like with the exception of the wheels.

Re: My '66 build thread

Looks sweet mean. That is going to be one big beast of a custom classic truck when you finish it.

Re: My '66 build thread

Yeah that's one big tank.....looks good....nice welds too.

I see you went with an ORD shackle flip in the rear. Is there a reason you didn't go with some 52's up front?

Re: My '66 build thread

You guys have too much off road crap. I see a dune-tire equipped Raptor and maybe a Rhino in the garage also. Man, I need to visit your place for a few days. That fab work is beauteous/clean and the suspension is insane.

Re: My '66 build thread

joe, we didnt get any pics while we welded it up but all we did was a plate centered int the tank going from front to back the full length and height. and put 2 1 inch holes in the bottom of that plate and stitch welded it in.
