2wd to 4wd front end swap
Since Im not having much luck finding a chassis in my area I was wondering about this. I have a post in the 4x4 board but I thought I might get some good info here too.
It seems to me that I can unbolt the 71-72 2wd front end and bolt the 71-72 4wd front end in with minor mods and steering changes. With this swap I'll using a 71-72 coil chassis. Got a 12 bolt rear and I have to check its ratio. Has anyone done this? Anyone in NJ got parts? |

I was under the impression it was not worth the time, and that the frames were not the same.
But let some one who's been into the 4X4's who knows for certian tell you...I am not quite sure. |

Do you have the front axel assembly including 71-72 crossmember.
If so what ratio. I will have to check the ratio on the rear I have at home. |

I had looked into this about 15 years ago and if Im not mistaken the 2 wheel drive frame lacked the "step up" above the front axle required of the four wheel drive. I believe the this was needed to allow for the vertical travel of the front suspension. If you went to a radical suspension lift you should be able to compensate for this. If you have a excellent welder and/ or weldee you can do a frame graft. It was too much of a project back then for me. I have a buddy who has offered me the suspension and 4:10 running gear from a 4x4 72 'burb to stick under my 4:56 ( I believe) one ton longhorn. Its tempting but ... well I just dont know. Anyway, someone correct me if I'm mistaken on the swap.
