Engine cleaning question

I just bought another 67 and the motor has a layer of grease and dirt on it about 1/2 inch thick. What is the best way to get this all off? what is a good solvent that will help loosen up this stuff?

"Gunk" engine brite cleaner and a bristle brush. If it's 1/2" thick you should probabably scrape off what you can before you start washing it. Spray gunk on there let it sit a few and brush it, repeat as neccesary, and then just rinse it clean with the garden hose.

I personally love some stuff called super cleaner. I think that is what its called. It comes in a purple bottle. If you dont dilute it, which works best, spray off quickly, or else it will strip paint. my engine brakets are now orange again after thinking longer is better. brakets were painted red.

Well, one nice thing about gunk is it's very effective against grease, but won't damage paint, hoses or wires. It also rinses very easy and leaves no residue. Gunk will only disolve the grease, it will not clean regular dirt or whatever else.

That's the problem though, the motor is still in the truck with everything else. So it's going to have to be a cleaner that isn't going to ruin the wires hoses and everything else in there. It sounds like the Gunk engine cleaner is a pretty good option.

Faster_than_you, I think that the stuff that you are talking about is Castrol super clean. I heard that that stuff works great but I think that it may be too strong. I guess it could be diluted though.

I've seen Super clean fade paint before. I've used oven cleaner with good success.

Easy Off Oven cleaner works good. In the old days I used to wet the engine down and dump Tide laundry detergent on it and pressure wash it off.

You could let it run at opt. temp while cleaning it! This will help against damage!

gunk, castrol S C , Tide, Oven easy off, all work good!

Once it is clean put Armoral all over and let it sit over night!

Castrol super clean is the best when it comes to engine cleaner. You may have dilute it some, but it also works great diluted. Don't worry about the wires drying out. Super clean is in a purple plastic bottle so it will not hurt the plastic coating on the wires. I don't use anything else. Go to the car wash and use the pressure washer.

IT DOESN'T HURT A THING TO POP YOU'RE HOOD & WASH YOU'RE MOTOR OFF EVERY TIME YOU GO TO THE CAR WASH. IF YOU STILL HAVE THE POINTS TYPE DISTRIBUTOR YOU HAVE TO BE A LITTLE CAREFUL ABOUT SPRAYING DIRECTLY ON IT, BUT IF YOU HAVE SWITCHED TO AN HEI, YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT GETTING WET AT ALL. JUST LEAVE THE MOTOR RUNNING WHILE YOU WASH IT, & IT'LL BE DRY BY THE TIME YOU GET 4 OR 5 MILES DOWN THE ROAD. JOHN

If you can get access to a steam cleaner, that will do better than anything described here.
With out steam, I'd go for the Super Clean and pressure washer (coin op car wash) The super Clean you get at the parts store is so diluted that it won't hurn anything if you spray it off within a min or two. The industial stuff will do some damage though.
Oh, and don't spill the stuff down your "front side"...a co-worker will attest to that.

I have used all the engine degreaser products you can think of, and the best by far is Easy Off Oven Cleaner!!
Really! Just scrape off the big clumps with a screwdriver, and spray the stuff on, wait 15 mins. and spray it off with a regular garden hose / sprayer.
Works great!!

I did mine with OVEN CLEANER!!!!! Tried Super Clean but got much better results with the oven cleaner.
