I'll be buying a new GM crate motor soon.
They come painted black, but I want to paint mine Orange.
Should I use Grey primer first then orange?
If I use primer, does it need to be high temp? Do they even make high temp primer? If so, where do you buy it?
I don't think just trying to cover the black with orange will work very well.
It's going to be a new motor, so I dont think a paint strip product would be a good idea.

Your advice would be great!

Yes, Dupli-color makes a gray primer hi-temp formula for engines. It's rated 500 fahrenheit. I got it at Checker Auto. Personally, I too prefer a Chevy engine in orange. I'm not sure how well new paint will take to a factory black finish -- you may have to rough the surface up with steel wool or sandpaper first.

I would use this Kit it will last longet that a rattle can will do.

I bought a GM crate engine about 2 years ago.
The black they paint them is like a quick black spray/wash (like radiator shops do to your radiator) to keep the engine from rusting.

Just use a degreaser on it and paint it Chevy Orange. I used VHS Chevy Orange and it is still clinging on the engine. No peels, cracks other.

If it's a show truck then do what you think is best.
