Burb Gas Tank?? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Was at the local auto parts store today and a guy walks up to me out in the parking lot looking at my truck. He asks what I did with the gas tank filler and I point out to him where it runs up the inside of the drivers side bed right behind the wheel well. He says on his 72 he used the gas tank from a Suburban that had a filler inlet that allowed him to place the filler neck right behind the license plate with a short length of rubber filler hose straight to the tank inlet??

Has anybody ever heard of a Burb tank that would be the right size,(width), that would allow us to strap it up there between the frame rails behind the rear? And that has the filler inlet facing back towards the license plate?

If this does exist, we could put these guys out of business that sell these 'conversion kits' that leave you wondering how the heck you are gonna' get the gas in the tank!!

Appreciate any info that might be available.

Suburban filler tubes are on the drivers side of the truck, they don't exit out the back, unless he wasn't talking about a 67-72 era suburban, then I'm not much help.

I am pretty sure that 67-72 Suburban tanks sit between the frame rails, not sure where the filler tube is at on the tank.

Far as I know all Suburbans filled from one side or the other not the rear. Including the newer ones. I would suspect it is an old fullsize station wagon tank, but I can't see how he could have an effective fill behind the plate on a truck. It would be way to low.

I am pretty sure the filler was on the side in the middle, maybe he was able to install the tank sideways, so the filler was at the back.

The only way it would be possible to put a filler behind your licence plate would be if your licence plate was mounted above the height of the bed bottom. What ever tank you want to use the top of the tank has to be lower than the filler neck, or else that gas will flow backwards while trying to fill the tank. (Gravity is bigger than even these trucks...LOL) This is why the Blazers and Suburbans all have fillers about mid height on the rear quarters. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

On the 80's fullsize cars, the license plate covered teh filler, but then again, the neck ended about 1/2 way up the tailgate (if you were to use it on a truck). You'd have to either seriously lower the gas tank or seriously raise the filler neck and make it impractical. Something I have heard about is to take a rear-exiting tank like that and to cut the neck off and weld it straight up so the filler is in the bed just in front of the gate.

I have a tank from a 73 Sub and had it installed sideways so that the filler tube would end up behind the license plate. I don't know the future of my truck and didn't want to hack anything up only to have to weld up holes in the future, otherwise I would have done it. The fuel tank fits in the frame with no modification, just have to drill holes in the frame to hang it up with.

Basically the filler hose would come out on the panel just below the tailgate and I would have had to barely cut out a semi-circle in the tailgate in order to use a boat filler attachment.

Oh yeah, I still have the tank if anyone wants it. I'd be happy to show you how I would have done it.

I'm going to try to put a 72 Suburban tank under the rear frame rails on my C-30 this weekend. My only worry is where the fill will be located. Stay tuned...pictures to follow next week.

Sorry, I can't put the tank up in the space anymore; I have a 72 blazer tank all bolted in right now and just need to attach the fuel filler and lines.

If anyone wants to come get this tank it's free, but you gotta act fast as I'm going to be leaving in 2 weeks for a while.

I used a 72 blazer tank and straps cat a hole in the bed floor (just look at a blazer ) and cut the filler neck in the middle and welded it back together so the filler is right inside the bed.

I'm sorry I didn't get to start this project as I hoped. I'm thinking about just going back to the behind the seat tank to aleviate the problems of where the fill tube needs to be (I don't want to cut up the rare 9 foot long step side bed).

I have a 15 gallon madza truck tank in the back. the bed is raised so the filler neck is hidden by the tail gate

yeah its the madza sending unit. gauge doesn't work properly. If any one knows how to fix it fill me in!!!
