If you changed gear ratio in rear axle...wouldn't you have to change front too?

Stupid question but I just picked up a 71 K-10 and the guy said he had new 3.73 gears installed with posi but never said anything about up front.

you don't *have* to have the same ratio front and back for the truck to work in 2wd. also, if you drive off road exclusively, where the terrain is loose and will permit tires to slip, that would be ok in 4wd. however, if you put it in 4wd on pavement it won't be pretty. something will break, unless your tires can constantly break loose.

Maybe the old gears were also 3:73? I would want them to be the same, front & rear, no matter what.

In order for 4 Wheel Drive to work, they Front and Rear Gear Ratio's must be the same.

I agree with Adam. Pavement yes, in 2WD no and in the dirt no. You will notice the mud boggers run different ratios on purpose at times.
