Gas lines
Hey all
I accidentally twisted my old fuel line on the truck and was forced to install a new one, unfortunately, to get it to fit, I have to loosen the fitting that goes into the bottom of the fuel pump, which caused it to leak something nasty. I got it tightend up, and put teflon tape on all the fittings. It doesn't drip anymore, but it is still always moist with gas underneith (leaking a little bit, but not too much at all) It doesn't matter if I rev the engine up to 5000 rpm, it doesn't spray out. Is this dangerous to run like this? I'm gonna go to Napa tonight to get some new intake gaskets and valve cover gaskets, should I get a new non-metal fuel line that runs from the pump to the carb?

sorry for the hijack.. but...
should i put some teflon tape on teh threads of my AN fittings? i got a 3/8" to -06AN fitting for the fuel pump and am wondering about that. |

As I was told in the Marine Corps. ANY leak concerning fuel is a bad thing. If it is enough to cause a part to be damp, vapors are also around. Vapors = BOOOMMM!!! Replace any part which is causing your problems.
ocbaud - some sealant/lubricant should be used on any pipe thread, such as the nipple which screws into the fuel pump body. The connections which use compression (the ones with 37 degree angle sealing surfaces) should NEVER have tape put on them. I've always been told not to use any teflon tape for fuel fittings. I don't, and I've never had any leak...

AN type fittings are compression style...aka no tape

I just got a new fuel pump from the wreckers along with a nice HD hitch (good for 12 000 lbs) for 20 bucks, woohoo

Here is a link from rusell pperformance. Pipe fittings get tape, and the compression fittings don't. Hope this helps clarify what I said earlier.

Check the flare on the fuel line. It should be a double-flare and seal with no leaks. I just had to fabricate a new fuel line for my GM 3.0L in the boat. No leaks! Leaks are especially dangerous in a boat.
Fuel Leaks in the Bilge = Explosion Of course, you'll always get the rare morons like the guy in Florida who pumped the hull full of gas through the rod holder a couple of weeks ago. Hit the starter and BOOM! Again, check the flare and the seat in the female brass fitting. Teflon tape isn't necessary since it's the flare and seat, not the threads, that provide the sealing surfaces. Good luck!

Well, the new fuel pump works real good! But that hitch reciever I bought doesn't fit Guess I gotta take it back and look for a new one that is off an actual pickup.
