This may sound dumb but it seams like different people give me a different answer. Fitment for backspacing stays the same regardless of the diameter of the rim right? So if I go with 4.5" backspacing on a 17" rim I should be ok right? thanks.

Correct, nothing to do with diameter. However, I am sure you thought of this, 4" backspacing on a 8" wide rim will fit different then 4" backspacing on a 9" wide rim.

yeah I guess i should have mentioned that I would be running a 9 in rim.

On my 17x9½, I'm running 5½" of BS on all of em'. If you run a 9" rim, I'd run 5" of backspacing. If you have a lift and you want the tires to be more flush with the fenders, you MIGHT even try 4.75" to 4½" to push the rims out more.

I want them to stick out MAYBE an inch from the fender.
