Hi there folks, I recently parked my truck for a few months, I was working out of town for 3 months....I come back and I started it up and it idled beautifully one night, and the next day....I would start it up and it would idle for like a minute maybe less, and it would just die.....I don't know what the problem is, It will only stay on for about 10 seconds sometimes, then it just dies, I tried a different carburetor off of my brother-in-laws truck and it did the same thing, I don't know what the deal was, but I remember when I was driving it before I parked it, sometimes it would bog down when I pressed the gas all the way...anyways Please Help, thanks lots!

Did you put new gas in?

Or possibly a weak fuel pump.....

It sounds to me like you have developed a major vacuum leak. With the engine running, take a pair of needle nose pliers and pinch off all vacuum lines. If the idle improves, you have found your problem. Don't forget the brake booster and the PCV hoses.

Well, when I was gone my brother sucked all of the gas out with a hose for his truck...I put about 4-5 gallons in, but I don't know...if was running fine the night before when i put 2 gallons in, i thought it was out so i put more the next day, but....

the motor and tranny have about 1500 miles on them, I put a new fuel pump in when I put the new motor in, although this doesn't mean anything, could it really go out that fast? thanks

you could have a clogged strainer on the fuel pickup in the gas tank

Secondary ignition problem? plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, points, condensor.

um I dont know that much about all this stuff, but I would start with the fuel filter.

Don't know if it is your problem or not, but this worked for us recently with a friend's sedan delivery. Has similar symptoms, finally disconnected the fuel line after the tank and blew air in the tank. Heard a little thunk and it's been running fine ever since.

HAD SIMILAR PROBLEM W AN OLDER F**D. After spending several hundred dollars replacing fuel pumps, carbs, coils, plugs, wires, i rechecked the condenser (a $2 part) and that was it. I replaced nearly everthing I could think of but somehow overlooked it. Try the cheaper stuff FIRST... Good Luck..

Oh Yeah,I forgot to tell you, Mine did the exact same thing. cold started good but after about three minutes it would die. Let it cool off and it started just fine and would do the same thing again. The condenser can look fine outside (still shiny) but be bad. My truck had also been parked for a while previous to this problem. Thought I was gonna go nuts...No more F**rds!!!!!

same problem starting my 77 this year, had an airlock in the fuel line, after a while of dumping gas down the carb, it eventually ran fine
