Hey. If stock the front axle will be a Dana 44. The rear axle, It will be a Dana 60 or the HO72 Eaton. Do you mean (No Spin Rear Axle) if so its the Eaton. Big round insection cover with a removable 3rd member.

Yeah it's either a H052 or H072 only difference is the size of the rear drums. It's the predeccesor(sp?) to the 14 bolt. Has a 10.5" ring gear typically 4.10 or 4.56 gears. Only traction device is the no-spin AKA detroit locker, no longer made but was available in vehicles from 1948 to 1972 or something like that.

Axles

I have never had a problem with the Eaton, it is an excellent axle, basically a early 14 Bolt axle. The No Spin Rear Axle means its a Detroit Locker. The disc brake conversion is the same as the 14 Bolt, but with different spacers between the flange and the backing plate. I made my own brackets. Mine is also a No Spin. Parts are getting harder to get, thats why alot of people switch to the 14 Bolt. If you got it, run it.

The eaton is a good axle, like was said, it's basically a 14 bolt. If you have problems, 14 bolt shafts, carrier, etc. will fit in the housing. The benefit of this axle over a 14 bolt is diff clearance.

i recently purchased an Eaton with the No-Spin (detroit), if you ever take the diff cover off to check and see if the No-Spin is still inside, take a look at the photos in the link in my sig. they should help you out some.

justinf, Do you have some pics of a eaton w/ the 14 bolt carrier and shafts? This has been talked about before but nobody has actually seen it. Does the carrier use the eaton bearings or will the 14 bolts bearing need to be installed also? Could be a good upgrade more splines on shafts and cheap detroit lockers!

I don't have any pics right now, but my brother has one from a dually with the 14 bolt carrier, shafts and detroit in it. I can find out from him if it uses the 14 bolt bearings. I believe it does.

justinf, any info you can provide would be appreciated. I have an eaton w/ 4.56 gears and open diff, would like to lock it! I wounder if a "lunch box" 14b locker and 14 bolt axle shafts would fit in the eaton carrier, hmmmmm

They don't offer lunchbox lockers for 14 bolts yet, I think just about the only thing you can get is a full detroit.

Yeah but a full detroit for a 14bff is simple. It reuses the original carrier and is cheap.

Powertrax makes the Lock Right and No-Slip for the 14 bolt.

the lock right and no-slip are each $400, the detroit is $350 for 14bff applications.

i am curious about using the eaton housing with 14bff innards, i think it would be the best way to go.

there is a disc brake conversion available for the Eaton, or you could make your own brackets and use a mishmash of brake parts to get it to work. Anyway, the kit is around $400, IIRC, with new rotors and calipers.

Here is an option 1969 GMC was talking about..
GM rear disc brake kits

Just scroll down you will see our Eaton kit..
I would also be interested in seeing how the 14 bolt axles and carriers work in the Eaton...

You can use any axel from a 71 or 72 and get disc.
You'll just have to match gear ratios with the rear.

the drums can be expensive if you can find them. also, the wheel cylinders are outrageously priced (from what I hear) in comparison with other wheel cylinders. that is why I plan on converting my HO52 to discs, someday. In addition, i get to have the 4 wheel disc bling factor.

gmc71, you have a dana 44 up front, with closed knuckles and drum brakes. you can swap a disc braked dana 44 ('71-'80) or 10 bolt ('77-'91) in, but you will need new ubolts, and also the brake fittings changed over to metric sometime in the 70s.

Money is always a problem. If you think about your time, and the price to go stock. It might be cheaper to convert to disc...
