OT Newer chevy truck problems?
Hello all
This summer or sooner I am going to try and get a 2001 or newer 2500HD. I was wondering if any of you have heard any major problems with these trucks? I was told that they had piston slap, and at school i went onto our computers and looked up the recalls on them and other customer interests. so if anyone has anything they know about these trucks or has one and could tell me a few things about it. Thanks Rat

Rat, Which motor are you after the 6.0 or 8.1? I work at a Chevy dealership, if you have anymore questions.

my dream truck would be an 8.1 with the allison but i would take either the 6.0 or the 8.1.... i have heard that the 8.1 mpg is not that bad, but the hard thing is finding one in a truck that isnt beat that i can afford. but i would like to hear the pros and cons of both engines if you have the inside, and the allison vs the 4l80E if you could.
Thanks a lot Rat

Depending on how much you tow/haul with the truck is what is really going to determine what kind of milage you will get, I assume you are buying a 4x4? If so a 6.0 is at best on a good day going down hill with the wind will get maybe 14mpg when you hook up a trailor with a little bit a weight you will dip well below 10mpg. Don't get me wrong I believe it is a solid engine. With the 8.1 you should be around 8 to 10 mpg unless you really load it down. Both trannys are pretty solid but the allison is heads and tails above the 4 speed imo. The way you can feel it downshift when you are pulling a heavy load is cool as hell. Those trucks are out there (8.1 & allison) try to find someone who might of pulled a boat or something like that, you know not a farmer or construction worker(no offense but the boater is more likely to treat it as a toy than a tool) Have you thaught about a duramax?

azskso- thank you. i understand were your coming from with the boat towing, i was also looking for ones that havent been plowed with. the gas milage is not a major concern for me because my tahoe now gets only 13 on a good. yes i am also looking for a 4x4. Do you know of any problems with either engine? i just mainly want to know what i should look for when test driving and looking at one.
Thanks a lot Rat

I have the 6.0 engine in my 1500hd. The fuel mileage is as bad as you hear, but the power is suprising. I have had zero problems with the truck, engine included. The engine does have a little lifter tap after cold start ups. Don't let that scare you, it is a characteristic of the engine. I have not talked to anyone who owns one that does not tap. I also have the allison trany. So far it is trouble free. Good luck.

Regarding 'piston slap' or 'cold start knock' - I have had that on my 2000 5.3l GMC since it was new. After 106K trouble free miles it is fine. There are no real problems with these trucks IMO. |

My dad has had problems with the Allison going into reverse. I guess it is some electronic module. It has a mind of its own with reverse even after it has been in the shop several times. I think he would say it is a decent truck but not spetacular. It is a one ton, 4X4 dually extended cab with the 8.1. It runs ok for a heavy truck, but not a speed demon. My blue K20 with the ZZ3 tows better but less comfort of course..lol

2002 2500hd Duramax
Well i know you asked about the gas engines, but I've got the diesel with the allison. I really like it alot not a single proble and the automatic downshift is really cool, i liked it alot when i drove it in the snow on a trip through the sierras.

My friend had a 2002 2500HD for a while. You can see pics on my site in my sig. It did have the piston slap thing (this is a 6.0 BTW), and had 4.10s and a locker. Gas mileage was ok (approx 12 mpg) for a while until the exhaust went on . Dual glasspacks may sound great, but really kill your gas mileage when you can keep your foot off the loud petal! The only other problem I can think of was that he got rid of it at about 32,000 miles (because he needed to save money on gas) and it already needed new front rotors. Of course, his replacement (2003 Tacoma TRD V6) now has a supercharger on it, and he's probably spending more money on the premium than he was on gas for the HD!

plan for the future and buy a duramax with the allison transmission. It may hurt the pocket book now but when you try to trade it in you'll thank yourself for buying a diesel.
Gas vehicles don't hold there value as well as diesels |

I've got a 2000 GMC Sierra 2500HD 6.0L auto 4x4. It does rattle a bit when cold, but other than that she is pretty quiet and runs good. As far as the gas milage I get 15 to 16mpg when I am not hauling and 12 to 13mpg when I am (I haul a 2 horse bumper pull). I am surprised you guys get so much lower mpg... I've gotten close to 17mpg on a trip with it before...
