has anyone out there modified their tailgate to the 73-87 style hindge that way you can take it off with out taking out bolts? i noticed the radius of the 1981 hindges are smaller. did you just weld some metal on to make it the same size? thanx

Used the original 69 brackets. Pic 2 shows how he cut the right one and put flat metal back onto it to strengthen(sp) it back up...

How often do you guys remove your tailgate?
I've had mine off twice in 3 1/2 years.

i take mine off regularly-- its a pain to pull a gooseneck with the tailgate on imo. the 71 c10 has a 78 hinge (which IS smaller) but it doesnt rattle or anything, i just put the top bolt in (bottem wouldnt fit) and then tightened it down tight, and cut a slit in the trunion on the gate

2 fullsize motocross bikes will not fit in a shortbox (if your into that sort of thing) unless you remove the tailgate and my streetbike will only fit on an angle without removing the tailgate as the wheelbases (on the bikes) are too long. My KZ 1000 (streetbike) weighs @ 500lbs and its a bit of a pain to get it on an angle so you can get the tailgate to shut (a small price to pay for owning a short fleet IMO) Regards Doug

i have a roll pan on the back of my truck so it is impossible to get the bottom bolts in when the tail gate is on. plus the after market tail gate i have was just a little too narrow and kept sliding off of the hindge when it was down. i had to take it off to fix that so i might a well do the swap since i have a burnt down pile of junk (81 gmc)in my back yard.
