tranny fluid pump???
my truck had been shifting funny so i was checking it out and noticed it was leaking tranny fluid. It was doing this before and when i took it in they told me that the pan was leaking and they put a new gasket on it.
this time they are saying that it is the pump seal that is leaking. $300 to get it fixed cause they have to drop the tranny out. does this seem right? The guy also said that i need a dust cover. where can i find one of those?

 $300.00 bucks for a front pump seal is about right. They do indeed have to split the engine and trans apart to get to it. The seal itself is less than $8.00 so what you are paying for is labor, labor, labor.The dust shield is the stamped shield that covers your torque converter and flex-plate. Is yours damaged or missing? How comfortable are you pulling a trans by yourself? There is some big-bucks to be saved in you going for it !

if i had some jacks and and other tools i would mind doing it. But i dont have that stuff. nor do i have a good place to work on it.
i didnt look under the truck yet. The guy at the shop told me i needed a dust cover.

You dont need a dust cover unless you go deep mudding. I had plenty of old cars and trucks that didnt have one and they did fine. You can get one from a junkyard for real cheap though or a chromed one from Summit or Jegs. Not having a dust sheild wont make it leak. I've driven through deep water without one and through mud, all I did was use a hose to wash out the bellhousing while the ngine was running.

Dust covers are over rated.
However, if you feel you need one, look under the 4X4 trucks in the junk yards...the 73 - 87's (at least some of those years anyways) had a cast alluminum one that is 10 times better than any stamped steel one could ever be. |

i dont think i am going to get a dust cover. Just gotta get that seal replaced

me and a friend were driving around (beating) his 79 half ton, its a 250 6 with a th 350, and no shield, anyways a stick went up and got lodged in the flywheel, man that made some nois, funny as hell though
