helper springs

i assume these helper springs on top in picture below? everything looks kinda rigged to me. this is my first truck project so have no idea also i read alot of people just cutting off the old u-bolts to drop the rear, i cut one ubolt today and thing souded like gun going off when broke through. is there any danger of the springs seperating and flying out? i know they pretty rusty and only have one clamp in the front dont see anything holding them together in the rear.shouldnt there be spring clamps in the rear too? i got all the weight off of springs and was just wondering before i cut the rest of the bolts off so i dont get killed lol.

I cut all my u-bolts off and yes they are loud. Those overloads don't look factory installed. Should be no problem with the springs coming apart, there is bolt through the center holding all the leaves together.

Those appear to be aftermarket overloads - and I don't think think they are available any more in that style, with the pads bolted to the frame at each end - so they might be worth something to someone.

As long as the springs aren't under any stress, you should be okay cutting the u-bolts. The center bolt mentioned above is relatively small, and I think it's mainly to keep all the leaves in position - that is, I wouldn't trust its strength too much IF the springs were under tension.

Like stocker said you want to have the springs basically hanging free with the jack supporting the rear end.

hey i dont know if those are factory or not, My 71k20 came from oregon state, it was a fire truck, & has the same exact overloads. my build sheet doesnt have them listed. The fire department didnt put them on & they owned it since 74. I dont know about the original owner? Maybe they were offered as aftermarket through the factory. I'm taking mine off & throwing them in the trash heep.

Ack! Don't toss 'em! They are a good design and not made any more for our trucks - gotta be someone who'd be glad to have 'em.

Looking at the pad brackets, they are clearly aftermarket. Sears and others used to sell them. If they were OEM, the brackets would be riveted to the frame, and would not have the long "universal fit" vertical section that bolts to the frame.
