Fuel guage problem

My fuel guage went to empty when the fuel tank is full. This sending unit was new in November or December. Any ideas. When I filled the tank it went to full, sat overnight & it said empty.

It sound to me like your float don't float! Pull it out and shake it. If it has any fuel inside, get a new one.

This was a brand new gauge in December. If I disconnect the wire from the sending unit, the fuel gauge goes to full, reconnect the wire, the gauge goes to empty, or there abouts. When the truck is moving, I can see the gauge moving like the float is moving.

Sounds like you have a fuel tank not grounded. Theres only one wire hooked to the sending unit and the tank grounds it. Check for loose tank bolts .

Thanks, I'll try grounding the tank.

Check for a grounded sending unit wire. The gauge will go to E when the brown wire (sending unit wire) is grouned. When the sending unit wire does not recieve a ground signal it will cause the gauge to go past full.

Hopefully you'll find a shorted spot in the wire going from the tank to the gauge, if not your sending unit could have issues (sinking float).

Thanks Garrett,
I'll trace the wire, see what I can come up with. By the way, I have a brother that lives in your town.
