Ford Front axle Question

My uncle had a front axle out of a 78 3/4 ton Ford, it has discs on it and 10 bolts on the cover, is this also a Dana axle. Can it be transplanted into my truck so i can have discs up front? The price is right(free) so I thought it would be worth asking.

He also has an NP205 from out of the same truck, should I get if for a spare, I assume is would be the same?

if you are planning on putting it in a GM 4x4 you can do it, but the t-case drop is on the wrong side, so you would have to use a ford case. i don't know how well you could pair a GM tranny and FMC tcase as the mounting patterns are different. i am pretty sure the spring centers are either the same or so close it wouldn't matter, but you may have to use for spring plates and u-bolts. if this is goin in a ford vehicle it will fit in another 3/4 ton of the same vintage, but i think that the 1/2 ton trucks used coil/radius arms.

You need to find a newer GM axle for your K20. As noted above, the Ford axle has the differential on the wrong side. Any 3/4 or SRW 1 ton axle from '72 - '87 will work.

Side note: if it's a dana60 high pinion, then someone doing a IFS to solid axle swap would probably pay plenty for it, as the 87(92) up IFS chevys have the pumpkin on the driverside.

Yup Ford pinion on wrong side to use with your chevy driveline (transfercase)..
You could swap over ford stuff but that would cost you more than finding a 3/4ton dana 44 out of a '73 up chevy..

if its free, then I would take it and re sell it to get money for a proper frontend to put in.

And no, the 205 out of that truck would be a ford 205 which means it would match to the pinion on the frontend( driverside output to the driverside pinion..)Way to much of a hassle to swap over..I knoe free sounds good but pain in the a$$ swap overs don't..

Take the stuff and sell them in a newspaper or internet...
then buy the right stuff to put in..

Just my .02

Thumbs up

ford axles of that vintage are sought after, like Jim said people doing SAS (solid axle swaps) want them, and also Jeeps have driver's drop differentials.

If you can, post pics of the axle...Ford high pinion dana 60's aren't as easy to ID as GM/Dodge dana 60s, because they use 4 ubolts vs 3 on a GM/Dodge, so from far away they will look like dana 44's.
However, you can look to see if it has kingpins (dana 60) or balljoints (dana 44). Also, it will have the model # cast into the housing, but this may be unreadable.

fyi, if it does happen to be a HP dana 60 and it is in good shape, you can expect to get $1200 or so for it, if you decide to sell. hope this helps
