I need to quit being so lazy

I was driving the 79 yesterday and noticed the inspection sticker was out. I knew I needed to rebuild the Q-jet on it but thought I would try to get it inspected anyway. Too lazy to put a kit in the carb you know?

So I take it in and tell the guy it probably wouldn't pass emissions being as the carb was in bad shape. He puts the machine on manual so it won't be hooked up to the states computers. This way if it don't pass, it won't cost me anything. The standard for HC in our state is 220. My 85 with all I've done to it never gets over 100. Well last year it did for the first time simply because I installed so of the .015" steel shim head gaskets last year to up the compression some. I think it was 103. Before this it was usually around 50 to 60.

Anyway he sticks the sniffer in the tailpipe and the HC was hitting anywhere from 850 to 900. WOW. I knew it needed the carb rebuilt and was using too much gas, but damn. I very seldom drive it so I had been putting it off. I decided to finally rebuild the Q-jet. Got it back on a little while ago. It's like a different truck. No more skip or gas smell out the tailpipe. Didn't have time to get it by for the inspection. I'll get it done tomorrow. We'll see how much the rebuilt carb helps.

I've been trying to get our 76 civic CVCC wagon smogged and it is a friggen PAIN! Only one last time but I've had to time it and adjust the idle speed 3 trimes and it still isn't right.

Last time my truck failed smog it was because the 7 cylinder wasn't firing at all. Dumping raw gas makes it go way off the charts. Who knew?

Yeah, seems them damned machines don't like raw gas coming out .

Of course with the prices on this stuff, it's not a good idea to be running around like that anyway. Again for me, it was a matter of being too lazy to fix it.

haha, my truck would totally be off the chart... The thing belches enough raw fuel out that it can make a guy dizzy standing nearby it... Something is up with my carb though, the motor stumbles a whole lot on acceleration, and smells like gas when it gets going, plus, it is constantly dieseling. One time when I turned it off, I was looking at my frame when I heard a Whump, and out shoots a fireball from the back of my muffler...

Mike why did you have to do emmisions ? Did they actually pass that in the Charlotte metro area?

Liz,

emissions have been in effect here in Gaston county for around 10 years. Longer in Mecklenburg county.

Here are the current counties. They are adding 5 more in July this year, 15 next year and 5 more in 2006.

I heard they were tryin to do it here withing the next 5-10 years, but had nfc they did it elsewhere .. move a lil further south ?

Robert,

good question. A giant part of NC is still lowly unpopulated. The most populated counties were added at first. Mecklenburg, where Charlotte is, was one of if not the very first county. As more and more counties get to a status of producing more pollution, they add them on. I'm not sure what gauge they use to determine this though.

I also found out some good info yesterday. I learned it ain't going anywhere anytime soon. I heard before long, this would be nationwide. The EPA wants this crap to be inforced. States have the option to not do it. But I also heard the EPA has plans to cut some federal road funds to the states who do not comply. It's not going to get any better. I also heard somewhere they were thinking about stopping the safety part of the inspection and just do the emissions part.

We all know the safety inspection is a bunch of crap anyway.

Government regulations. What would we do without them?

Mike they have said it was coming but its still bein fought. They are also tryin to pass a junk car rule here this june IE anything they feel is junk over two cars gets towed scrapped you get the bill. Ill have to read your link when I wake up a bit more. I can deal with emissions testing to a point, BUT not like NY or Cali has. They need to leave our back woods lil towns alone

ewe.. your link sucks mike that isn't what the local papers say when they write about it from time to time. If its in teh works with a set timeline from DMV guess we are stuck with it .. but can you see it actually working in my lil town with under 500 people? I can see the stations in Lumberton going by the book, but these back woods good ol boys, i dunno .. just can't picture it ...

I bought the 79 last year. Nothing to brag about, just a pine bark hauler. Yes, I have two vans. The 87 and a 92.

Liz,

the thing about these tests. When it's passed in a county, the towns are not of a concern to them. They worry about the county wide thing. It's a bunch of crap paying $30.00 for an inspection every year.

Man, it's amazing what a good Q-jet rebuild will do. I took the 79 back today to see if it would pass since the rebuild. As stated above, before the HC reading was bouncing around in the 800's. Well today, the reading was 88. Passed with flying colors.

And to top this all off, the thing runs like a new truck too. Along with this and the news about my two cat deal for the 85, I'm pretty dang happy right now. Now if I can just get my disc brakes fixed.
