What to do with the hole in the side of my truck????

Well, I relocated the gas tank to the bed. Now I have a hole behind my door. Just was wondering if everyone could give me some ideas on what to do or what you did with your own? I know filling it and painting would be the best way, but it was already painted and I just want to drive it

I'm planning on using the origianl filler neck and gas cap somehow, but I don't know exactly how yet...

Thanks

I think a keyless entry keypad thing would be cool if you could find one small enough................that's all I can come up with now.

Insulate the gas tank, enlarge the hole in the filler neck just enough so that a beer, I mean soda pop, bottle will fit through it. Or, turn it into an ashtray, folks will freak seeing you stuff lit butts into your gas tank. Piggy bank, just tell people that with the price of gas you are better off burnig money and then stuff a few bills into it. Mount a flashlight to the end of the gas cap for emergencies. Urinal. Fishin' pole holder. remove the filler neck and make a bracket to hold a gas cap close to the body, with a rubber gasket.

fishin pole holder should slide right in. i second that, you can even get a nice shiney stainless steal one . ash tray is funny as hell though. lots of options. my truck has 3 gas tanks yours can have TWO ASH TRAYS. considering the price of gas and the price o cigs these are both useless options.lol
turning the old tank into a keg makes the most sense.

I like the ashtray and piggy bank ideas! Either one would be cool to watch people's reactions.

you could look for a 67 - 72 c-40 or bigger trucks, they had a stock fuel tank delete plate that goes on easily.
I have a pic somewhere...but i can't find it at the moment.

put one of those springy things in it that shoots out of those joke cans of nuts...go to a full serve station and watch the attendant have a heart attack when he undoes the gas cap

LOL!!! You guys are great. I really like the ash tray idea... but I don't smoke, maybe I'll have to start now J/K. I can just picture it... Pull into a cruise night etc. parking lot, everyone gathers around the truck, well because it's sweet as hell. Smoking a cig, as you continue to carry on conversations with everyone, out of the blue take off your gas cap and throw in a glowing cig butt.

Seriously though, right now the best idea I came up with was to cut off the old filler neck off the gas tank. Fit it in the opening, mark w/ a marker and then cut the portion of the filler neck that is on the inside of the truck (guess it'll pretty much be the whole thing) the lenth way and bend each sectiong accordingly so they fit the contour of the inside of the cab. Slide it through the hole, put on the gas cap and it'll hold itself in place(original rubber grommet should be good enough to prevent gas cap from getting to paint). I wouldn't be able to do anything cool like you guys thought of, but... So, what do you think?

What you have to do is fix it so that the original gas cap is in place, but welded closed. It'll drive the gas attendants at full serves crazy.

i used a giant freeze plug, i got one that fit inside the rubber grommet and u can just paint it. i was going to cut off the stock neck but i didn't want anyone putting gas in the cab (or myself on one of those days, lol)

fast_dev,
So, you're not using the gas cap? You have the gas tank out right..?

I was worried about the truck getting filled up with gas too!! I'm going to make a metal plate and either wedge it in or weld it in the inside of the filler neck. That way if someone takes of the gas cap to fill it up and the filler neck doesn't fall out(which it may) there'll be a plate in the filler neck and you won't be able to get the nozzle into the filler neck in the first place. Good Point!!

Any other ideas on how to attach the filler to the inside of the cab?

Thanks,
Tom

how about mounting a portion of the old filler the same way an aftermarket guage goes with the bent strap accross the back held in with a couple of machine screws? just an idea.

Here's a picture of the gas tank delete. Don't remember where I got it though. I think it might have been Longhorn Man's.

I relocated my tank in my other 72 and left the hole there. I found that if you get an eight ball from an actual pool set it fits pretty tight in the rubber gasket. the worst thing that would happen is someone pushs on it. it looked pretty cool. I'll try to find a picture of it

I think this thread needs to be moved eventually to the FAQ section. I too have removed the "in-cab fuel bomb" from my 72, and plan on installing the 72 Suburban tank I have. My original filler hole has yet to be filled, and I just love some of the ideas suggested here.

what about a hidden potato gun? Umbrella holder? Place brochures with a "Free - take one" sign for people passing by in the marking lot... no no, put a clock face in there so you can see the time from outside the truck!!

In my college dorm a guy down the hall developed a muffin gun that he used to blast muffins a couple hundred yards. (Sometimes our cafeteria was wanting.) A variation on the potato gun?

Yeah, "Is there a tiger in your tank?" campaign by Exxon/mobile

I was kinda wanting to keep the hole servicable, just in case some one like CPNE would end up being the next owner I like the idea of finding a delete plate from a C-40 or above and painting body color...of course...I do like beer......

put a beer tap on it and make a gas tank shaped keg for behind the seat and an electric pump to run it
