For the price of a good stacked plate cooler (I hate tube and fin) I wouldn't even attempt messing with an a/c condenser, it's probably way too big and restrictive

Pep boys has a Hayden Stack plate kit that has everything you need for around $60 and it works DAMN good. Put it on my last three trucks. I wouldn't play with the condensor core. Infact if the A/C is toast then yank it and it will improve your cooling. GM A/C has larger spacing then the factory radiator behind it. What makes it through the A/C coil doesn't make it through the radiator.

My Suburban is awsome because I tucked it behind my factory electric fan (it's a 454 tow package 87-91 thing and you wouldn't understand :p ). Usualy when it's hot enough for that fan to come on the temp is up on the tranny as well. Boom instant cool. Hottest I have ever seen the tranny in the burb was with that cooler was 210 and that was stop and go traffic with 5600lb of trailer behind it.

My K5's with the Th350...I got one up to 200 once. I was towing a car up a long steep grade. It was so steep semis were down too 40mph. I ran the hill at 55. Car was on a tow dolly so probably 3k max.

The Pep Boys Hayden coolers work great.

I have used the AC cooler more than once with good results. I cleaned mine out with mineral sprits then blew it out. Not much debris inside and it cleaned right up. The thing I liked about it was how easy it mounted in front of the radiator with the tube ends pointing right thru the holes already in the radiator support. Added fluid capacity too and cooled fairly well. Be sure to use oil rubber lines and NOT gasoline rubber lines they rot out from the inside out from the hot oil and the rubber parts don't play nice with your trans parts.

Might run a pusher fan infront of whatever you do use to help cool the fluid when you are stuck in traffic.

You might do what Swervin did and get a B/M SuperCooler. They run around $65, about the same price as a Hayden (Imperial) top of the line stacked plate cooler. It uses fittings rather that the hose barb fitting. You might be careful in its placement, as Mike could tell you. :p

The B&M super cooler is just a Long brand cooler, you might be able to ge it cheaper without the B&M box full of stuckers and what not

I have one of those and also have a lot of fluidyne and modine coolers, all of them are pretty nice and do a good job.

Awesome coolers by Long [out of canada] the best price on those that I have found are from Transstar. Can be used as an engine oil cooler also and they are rated at 28k I believe.

Man that's pretty. When I find that "right 2wd K5" for my street truck I'll be making it all pretty like that. I mounted almost Identical. It Cheesed the hoses by sliding them in a 3/4 heater hose to protect them and routed through the two holes in the center of the picture. Periodicly check and make sure the heater hose sleeve in instact.
