Axle Question
What is the difference between a corporate axle and a regular axle? I hear alot of talk about "corporate" axles and have no idea what it means. also how would i know if i had one of these so-called "corporate" axles? THANKS

corporate axles are usually axles made by GM, for example the 10-,12-, and 14-bolt axles are all corporate units.

GM used to use axles made by Eaton and by Dana and such, so the axles were from an outside source. Then GM started making their own axles, the 10 bolt, 12 bolt, and 2 versions of the 14 bolt. They were made by GM so they also got the name Corporate.

The ones made by Eaton are also refered to as corperate axles, these axles refered to by their RPO code (H052 and H072) are what was available before the legendary GM 14 bolt axle. What you have to watch for is the dana 44 has 10 bolts like the GM 10 bolt axle.

Just to help the Corporate/eatons Had a round 10 bolt rear cover and a drop out nodular front center section (like the 9" fords). I believe it had a 9-1/2" ring gear. Denny |

Make that 10.5". The axle shafts were a hair over 1.5" but had only 17 splines. As comparision the 14 bolt FF and dana 70 are also around 10.5" and have 1.5" axle shafts but more splines.

Your right but those are 73 and later axles identified as "14 bolt" axles. The "eaton/corperate" axle w/ round cover and drop out center were only FF and 10.5" ring gear. There were higher GVWR axles similar to the eaton/corperate or H052/H072 that had larger ring gears these were 11000 and I believe 14000 lb axles.

Jim, they did in fact make other sizes of eaton axles...pre 67, 1/2 ton trucks had an axle that looked like the HO52 but was semifloat with 6 lugs. I am not sure of the ring gear size of this axle. They also made a bigger version in some 1 ton trucks called the H135 or something like that, it didnt have a removable diff cover and had a 12.25" ring gear. there were also many other sizes that were available in larger trucks.
but for 67-72 3/4 and 1 ton, only the HO52 and HO72, full floaters with 10.5" ring gear. I think the names have something to do with weight capacity, at 5200# and 7200#, but could be wrong.
