Wiring For Dummies??

Anyone know if there is a good book I can buy on auto wiring? I called a buddy the other night and he gave me a wiring diagram for 67-72 trucks so I am cool with that part, but i would like to know more about relays, stereos, etc... anyone have a suggestion on readin material?

If you really think about it, electrical is actually really simple, its just a bunch of loops, with one end being on the positive eventually, and one end on the negative eventually

Most of it should be color coded (not in my case, lol) and just needs you to sit down for a couple hours to make it all nice and such...

Just make sure that you solder and shrink sleeve all your connections to prevent shorts, Electrical tape works too, but will eventually grow old and fall off.

If you've got any questions, just send me a copy of that diagram, and pm with em!

There are books out there. Have a look in something like Barnes & Noble the next time you go south in the USA. Lots of the large soft cover type books on all sorts of auto issues including electrical stuff. They sure are getting a lot more expensive however. I remember when I got stuff like that for $5 and now they are more likely to be $25 and up.

Check out Painless sight under Tech Books, I was trying to see if it was possible to download one of their wiring diagrams, They also have a BBS for posting questions.

Found the link to download the PDF for their wiring kit for the GM Truck

Relays are pretty simple once you grasp it. Just think of it as a remote controlled toggle switch. Just like a basic (SPDT) toggle switch, it will have three connectors, Common, Normally Open, and Normally Closed.

The relay has two more connectors witch connect to it's electromagnetic coil. When you apply 12 v to the coil it flips the toggle switch. When the 12 v is removed from the coil the switch flips back.

The Common is connected to the normally closed connector when it's at rest, and flips to being connected to the Normally open connector when it's energized.

To power an electric fan for example, you would ignore the normally closed connector, Connect the common to your battery power source, and the N.O. connector to the fan's positive wire, ground the fan's negative wire.

Now when you apply power to the coil, N.O. connects to common, and the fan is powered.

Now that the fan is controlled by the low current coil, you can get crafty as to how you power the coil. Like for example connect one side to ignition, and the other side to a temperature switch, and the fan will operate only when the ignition is on and the temperature is above XXX degrees.
