I'm using a G4 (I think, OS 9.0) anyways there real good computers for doing "artsy" kinda of work but other than that I think they are a PITA! Expensive to get parts for and not many stores handle Mac parts or if they do they usually have to order them in.

The Mac itself though is a very good computer i believe and it's hard to beat proven success.

After being burned over the whole Apple/Mac upset in the 80's I've stayed away from Apple products. I've been tempted to take a look at them again, but they're so damned expensive and hard to modify. PC's are just plain easier to deal with, and since I'm a linux nut I like open source apps.

I was brought up in a Mac environment because of my art background, so I've always been comfortable working with that platform and continue to like it. I still use an older G-4 primarily running Quark, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Since the release of OS X and Jaguar, it is really nice because it's built on the Unix platform. I can open up a shell and work in an extremely powerful environment.

Like Cobalt, I just love how the open source community has evolved and the direction they are going. I have two machines running Mandrake and Debian were I do the majority of my php work and a lot of Telnetting, but I guess Debian is my favorite flavor of Linux.

Ocbaud, I think you'll really like your Powerbook.

As a designer, I use a MAC every day. I use a 500Mhz G4 with 1.5G Ram at work and I have a 1.25MHz G4 with 1G Ram at home. I'm just getting ready to upgrade the studio to G5's. Can't beat them for the design applications. A DP would be great for Photoshop. I have worked on both platforms and, other than getting the key commands confused, don't have a problem switching back & forth. I probably wouldn't recommend the average home user buy a MAC though. They are expensive and there isn't anywhere near the software available for them.
