Lost in engine!
This is the picture of my engine and this is the number on the block behind the block on driver side: 3970010. When I used a book or one of the web site to decode this nember, I tought I have 327 engine. As far as I know, this is orginal engine on this truck (I am not 100% sure) and also as far as I know 1967 chevy trucks didn't come with 350 engines. 350 came out later. Now, when I posted a picture of part of my engine to find an answer to different problem, looks like some of memebrs have different opinion about this engine. I would appreciate any input since I am trying to buy parts for this engine I guess I need to know what it is.
Thanks. |

Judging by the valve covers, the 350 appears to be from the late 70s or early 80s with the 327 intake manifold. There is a stamped code on the front of the block right in front of the right hand cyl head. These are the #s or letters that will tell you what it came out of.

There are usually two sets of numbers on this pad in front of the passenger side head. One set will tell you what type of vehicle the motor originally was in. If it starts with a T then it is a truck motor, if it starts with a C then a car motor. The second set will contain a partial VIN to tie it to a specific vehicle. In a lot of cases these numbers are gone due to the fact that the block has been machined or shaved at some point in its life. These are good blocks some are 2 bolt mains and other are 4 bolt mains. You will have to drop the pan to figure this out.

Thanks hutch. I guess my engine stays a mystery for now. At least I am happy that I am not blind! since I didn't see any number. By the way, what did you mean by dropping the pan? Do you mean oil pan?
Thanks again. |

You might try removing some of the paint from the pad to see if it was just painted over.

I scraped the paint. There was nothing there. Actually there was some evidence of sanding or brushing on it. Now the question is: I can not do anything to do to this engine until I find out what it is exactly. I have carburator problem which I wanted to take care of it by replacing the carb to 4 bbl. Also I was about to chage the intake too. This sucks!.
Thanks guys. |

Stick a 4 barrel on it! Doesn't matter what it is. Put a 600 cfm carb on it, great all-around carb for any small block. The intake manifolds are interchangeable so you won't have any problems. You might have to change your alternator bracket though.

Actually, that blue is not the original color blue Chevy used. I had a 81 Z28 and it had the blue engine(stock) but was a lighter blue. Also, the heads after 77 were the lightwieght heads are not good for rebuilds. The oil dipstick is also on the wrong side for a pre 78 engine. Thats probably a 350 out of a caprice or Camaro.

I'm not near my 72 to go and look at my heads. But when I look at his heads I do not see any assy. Holes for stuff like the alt. would that mean the heads he has on the motor are old style? The intake is old style. My guess is someone pulled the motor and and put what ever they had laying around to make it run then used a can of ford blue to top it off. But thats just a guess.

Randy's right... you can change the carb and intake regardless of which small block it is... just go easy with what you choose. My 500cfm is a great little carb too

Man, Im blind, yes there are no bolt holes in the heads so they are the good ones, at least rebuildable. They are pre 69 heads at least, probably the original 327 heads. If theres no numbers on the pad in front of the right head that means the block has been decked and most likely the shortblock was at least rebuilt.
