drastic action

The firewall on my 67 is a patch work quilt. The more I fix it the worse it looks. I want to cut it out and replace it with a flat sheet if 18gauge and hand form a square hump. I have done this on a smaller scale but this is a tad bit bidder than I have done. Are there any hidden items I need to be caucuses about?
I want the wall to be completely flat [to a point] so I know the brake rod will need adjusting, but that looks like the only problem. I am putting a modern air box for heat and a/c out of a newer front wheel drive into it so I will have no intrusion into the engine bay. Any constructive thoughts are truly appreciated
