I glass bead blasted mine...took all the old paint off. You have to hold the nozzle farther away than when blasting metal, be careful you can damage it. I used the same paint I used to paint my truck, except I used satin clearcoat from a spraycan. It looks really good and has held up well.

I used oven cleaner to degrease mine, then sanded it lightly, used the SEM pre cleaner stuff then used the SEM paint for plastic and interior pieces. It turned out great. Looks just like new

Console refurbish
Randy;
I just started to refurbish the console I picked up last week. It was in very good condition start with, so I don't need to do alot of patch work. I disassembled the console and scrubed it clean with soap & water. Then I lightly scuffed it with a scotch brite pad washed it again and sprayed it with Dupli-Color Vinyl & Fabric Color (VS 3 Flat Black ) I have only done the the lid so fare to test out how it would look. I was amazed at how nice it came out. Looks like brand new !!!! I wasn't sure if the flat black was the right choice until after I sprayed it. It looks more like a semi-gloss. Now I just have to do the rest of it. Gary |

The paint is called "Color coat"
The prep spray is called "plastic prep" if you are painting it black the color name is "Landau black" I used 1 1/2 cans of the paint, it works great for the door caps on Blazers too. Last edited by Gee_Emm; 06-10-2004 at 10:26 PM. |

I disasembled mine and threw it in the dishwasher with a little dawn. cleaned it up great then panted it with black upolstery dye I got at auto zone. looks great and is holding up well to.
PS allways send the oldlady on a mision that will last long enough for you to do two loads in the dishwasher, that way you get an ataboy for doing the dishes + you get steam cleaned truck parts.

Sorry to bring back an old post folks, but I'm restoring a console now too.
I see ash trays around, but can you still get the chrome plate and chrome trim anywhere? Mine are very pitted. Thanks, Davy

The plate can be bought repro at LMC, not sure of the quality. There also is a guy on ebay selling NOS ones. Thats were I got mine, they arent cheap though, I got mine for about $50 US I don't think the trim is reproed.

Thanks Gee.
Are there any "home-remedy" type tricks to getting some rust off the trim? Someone told me to rub it with tinfoil... Thanks, Dave

I tried taking the rust off my old one, the rust came off but it is impossible to polish it to make it look like a new one.
