Uh-oh, I think I lost my title!

I bought my truck a few months ago, and still have not registered it...I'm waiting to finish my work on it before I do that seeing as its just sitting in my backyard.. BUT, I think I've misplaced the title in thr process. I dont know how I can liscense it now. The truck was dontated to the Union Gospel Mission, where I bought it. I think the previous owner died, so there's no getting hold of him. There was no paperwork done other than me getting the signed over title from the mission- it was a quick easy cash for title trade.. So without a title, what can I do if I cant find the title? Am I screwed?

You should always title a vehicle immediately, even if you aren't going to license it for a while...I learned that the hard way. $125 fine.

If you don't, then the previous owner will get taxed for that period of time.

Just go into the office, be polite, and explain your situation. 90% of the time, people will help you.

If not, go to a different office in the same county.

Yes try to find it because they can only get a new title but since you never titled it in your name it will still be titled in the previous owners name and if he is dead more problems.

You not getting the truck put into your name as soon as you bought it and then loosing the title is the governments fault?? I fail to see the logic in that. I guess this is one way to keep from paying tax on it.

I don't suppose you have a bill of sale either??

That came out wrong, sorry. Its not the governments fault that I lost my title. They just make it so hard for people to live most of the time. I'm pulling my hair out, I've been on the phone and it sounds like I'm nowhere until I find it.

The UGM receipt (bill of sale) is WITH the title in a folder. I thought I put it in a safe place.

Get on the Texas Department of transportation site and do a bit of searching. I know you can file for a lost or stolen title. I just don't know what all it entails. Your not "screwed" but you will have to do a little research to find out what all you need...

You can get a lost tile no sweat but the title will be in the previous owners name because you never filed your new title so the one on record is in the previous owners name.
