OK guy's. I need some serious help!

I am trying to install headers on my 72 Chevy truck.

The first set I bought was Dynomax part # 86003.
Those hit the motor mount on the pass side. I could not bolt them up. So, I sent them back and ordered another set. I tried everthing even new tranny mount, and new motor mounts.

The second set I bought were Hooker part #2552-1. Ceramic coated. I got the part # from Piston. He used these on his truck, and they fit great.
These will not fit either. They are hitting on the upper control arm on BOTH sides.

Has anyone else had as much problems installing headers? There are no signs of any frame damage or anything like that.

Please help!

Thanks,
Nick

n737- have you thought about some chevelle shorty headers? I know some members had to do some custom work on the righthand frame rail but most go in with-out any trouble.

There are two different ways to mount your engine, in the forward holes or the back holes. Yours must be mounted in the two front holes. Your engine needs to be moved back. (I'm running Hooker super-comps, great fit, no problems). You'll also need your drive-shaft shortened if you do this, and your tranny crossmember will need to slide back to the next mounting position.

I am running 2452 Hookers(painted). My eng is in I 6 position, which slides it back about 3 1/2" from factory V8 sb spot. Looking at mine, it does look like the headers would fit d@mn tight in factory position.....they were built to fit a V8 truck tho.....? if you need just a little clearance, you might try loosening the bolts in the eng stands , & also trans crossmember, & sliding the eng back just a tad....the headers should fit that truck(should is a big word at times tho!) crazyL another thought.....you might check to see that the lower control arm shafts are properly located in the saddles(front to back). There is a locator pin on on end, that sits into a hole on the shaft. If someone had it apart @ 1 time, the shafts/arms could be moved rearward? best of luck, crazyL

So which mounting holes are the correct ones for a V8, the forward or the rear?

Is it going to hurt me in ANY way to move this engine/tranny to the rear mounting holes?

Thanks for everyones help!

My thoughts exactly. If you purchase for an application as engineered by GM, they should fit, if the current configuration matches the factory specs. To me, moving the engine should, if nothing else, complicate the fitment process. Not to mention all the other re-engineering you may have to consider.

If you're not building a performance engine (read stock to mild build), a good set of rams horns will work (and fit ) and alieviate a ton of potential headaches as well.

The doctor sez: "Take to rams horns, and call me in the morning".

Forward. Hurt no, add complexity, yes. Stick with what you have and find a solution elsewhere. If they are engineered properly they should fit with engine in stock location. You may want to look at lower cntrol arms as being the culprit.

If you loosen the stands, you should find a little adjustment(in stock position). if all you need to gain is say approx 1/4" for clearance, you may need to drill , or slot the trans crossmember (center holes for the mount), & it wont cause any fitment issues on the driveline or anywhere else.....I agree with CPNE, i would leave it in stock position , as its aready to run. IMO, i would check the a arms 1st, & adjust as needed from there(minor adjust on the stands). crazyL

Try shorty headers or hone out some manifolds before you re-engineer the whole deal!

I am just going to reinstall the stock manifolds, and get the exhaust routed. Then this winter, I will worry about all of this.

Thank you for all of the responses, and ideaas to help me out.
