new carb pic and new carb question!

hey guys i put my 1406 on today, absoutely love it, so much more responsive compared to the old quadrajet...anyways i got a crappy plastic filter cause thats all the store had today and i put it so it sort of rests on the intake but after taking it for a drive i checked it all out and the filter was damn warm, not like melting but warm, so anyways should i have it more out infront like above the water pump, and also i ran 3/8 hose right from the fuel pump because the old metal line was 5/16s, so i just got one of those weatherhead adaptors that the hose goes right on, i think the hose itself should be fine with the heat but that filter is a bit of a worry, sorry about the long post but if anyone has anything to say or advice lets hear it!

sh it i guess i should also ask now, which fitting on the front of the carb do i hook my vacuum line onto that comes from the distributor, its hei but im not sure if that makes a difference or not

I too just installed a 1406 along with an EPS intake. According the directions the left vacuum port is for distributor vacuum advance for emission-controlled engines and the right is for non-emission controlled engines. Its says to fully warm the engine, pull the vacuum hose of the carb and "feel" for vacuum by putting your finger on the vacuum port. If your distributor has timed vacuum advance, hook the distributor vacuum hose up to the passenger side vacuum port on the carb. If it has full vacuum advance, hook it up to the driver side vacuum port. I have a Mallory Unilite Electronic distrutor and it was on the left on the old carter I took off so I hooked it up to the left again. Seems to run fine and I had a guy time it with a timing gun that had settings for reving the motor and watching it advance so it must be working. Also installed Edelbrocks fuel filter/line package and there street fuel pump (so I could hook up that line which came with a 3/8" NPT 90 degree fitting which won't work on stock pumps).
